Funds were and continue to be used used to assist with payment of legal fees while the individuals await renewed work permits. LFH did not provide direct cash assistance to the individuals but applied funds in accordance with donor intent to support legal representation. Some of the funds remain for future fees. Many Haitian mountain people continue to survive through the efforts of their grown children who live and work in the US and other countries. Loan proceeds support small income-generating activities such as agriculture livestock raising charcoal production and small-scale trade. Contributions over the years have expanded the loan fund to over 10 million Haitian gourdes value $90,000 to $200,000 depending on exchange rate serving more than 850 individuals. Last year we did not increase the loan fund because this program is temporarily suspended due to the violent political and economic unrest in Haiti.
