The return was rejected by IRS e-file with the reason being given that Item J mismatches the IRS e-file database. We had correctly submitted, matching our determination letter that we are a 501(c)(12) on Item J of the rejected return. Our e-file provider informed us of the issue, and that the IRS BMF record appeared to currently list the organization as a 501(c)(2) organization in the IRS BMF record set. Renee Newman contacted the IRS by phone per a discussion with the organization's e-file provider team. Renee then sent the documentation via mail to IRS as instructed, confirming the organization had not made a change to the organization's status (same for over 40 years!) and that it was an error on the IRS' end. The organization has not yet heard back from the IRS that the recordkeeping issue has been corrected, but we are attempting again on October 8th, 2025 to re-send the return in the hopes that this issue has been resolved and can go through.
