The organization is careful to provide programs of varying degrees so that every patient/survivor has a place "in the boat" regardless of ability, age, stage of disease or rehabilitation, or demographic. DBC offers practice paddling 4-5 times per week from March to November and offers off-water fitness programs during the winter months for cancer patients, survivors, and community paddlers who choose to support the organization and/or who have been touched by cancer, and for novice paddlers who are just learning about how our programs can help provide healing and prevent recurrence. We provide all services for free to cancer patients and survivors. This has been corrected. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6 Dragon Boat Charleston membership requires registration but cancer survivors are never charged a membership fee. Members must re-register each year. Typically we have between 100 to 150 members. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a The membership votes to elect the Board of Directors during our annual member meeting in November of each year. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7b If a change to the bylaws is proposed then the membership must vote to accept or reject any changes. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b Once the 990 is prepared, a copy is provided to the board of directors for questions/concerns. Once all questions/concerns are resolved, the board votes to accept the 990 and a copy is sent to federal and state and posted to the membership portal for member review. The treasurer typically offers to review the 990 with any interested members. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Director, officers, and key individuals (anyone with access to proprietary information) are required to sign a conflict of interest agreement on an annual basis. The agreement requires that they disclose any potential conflicts as soon as they are identified. The board (without the responsible party) will then investigate to determine if a conflict exists and if it is material. If there is a material conflict, the board must determine whether the contemplated transaction may be authorized as just, fair, and reasonable to the organization. If determined a conflict exists that cannot be authorized, appropriate action will be taken to address the conflict. Actions can vary from recusal of self from any discussion or decisions (minor) to corrective or disciplinary action in egregious cases. The existence and resolution of all conflicts will be documented. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The current Executive Director was hired February 2023. Prior to hiring, the organization formed a search committee and hired a consultant to evaluate the organization's needs and the appropriate salary based on our budget, size, resources, as compared to similar organizations.
