<Desc>The Hannah Project works year-round to advance educational equity and social justice, strengthen reading and family literacy, and help parents advocate for meaningful change in their schools. Freedom Schools are more than summer programs-they are part of a movement. Rooted in literacy, civic engagement, and social action, Freedom Schools help prevent summer learning loss while developing young people's confidence, leadership, and voice. In 2025, the Hannah Freedom School served 110 scholars in grades K-8. Students in grades 3-8 attended the program on the Tamalpais High School campus, while kindergarten through second-grade scholars were hosted at the Marin City Community Services District facilities through a community partnership. At the heart of Freedom School is the Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC), which uses high-quality, culturally relevant books that reflect scholars' identities, histories, families, and communities. Through reading, discussion, writing, creative activities, and critical thinking, scholars strengthen their literacy skills, develop confidence and leadership, and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Most importantly, the curriculum encourages children to fall in love with reading and recognize their power to make a difference. Highlights of the 2025 program included a TED Talk-style video about student identity created by the eighth-grade class, a valuable partnership with the Marin County Library Foundation, and scholars reading an impressive 15 to 20 books each during the summer.</Desc>

<Desc>EDUCATIONAL AND ACADEMIC SERVICES FreedomSchool2/Scholar2Scholar (S2S) In 2022, concerned with the continued impact of the COVID pandemic, particularly among students entering adolescence during this period of isolation, Hannah piloted a new program we called FreedomSchool2/Scholar2Scholar focused on middle and high school students. Partnering with the Sausalito Marin City School District, Hannah provided full-time staff support on site at Dr. MLK Academy. Staff provided Tier 2 support to designated middle school students, oversight of student government, the student store, leadership development, and cultural celebrations including Hispanic Heritage Week, Black History Month, Dias de La Raza, Jazz History Month, and MLK and Caesar Chavez Day. In high school, Hannah provided part-time staffing in the Tamalpais High School District including collaboration with Tamalpais High's Success Network to monitor entering freshmen attendance, homework completion, grades and engagement in student activities. Program participants were given laptops to facilitate homework and ensure that each household could have reliable interface with online school communication. The FreedomSchool2/Scholar2Scholar program continued in 2023 with greater emphasis in the middle school program placed on behavior modification and academic preparation for high school. Dominican College provided tutors twice per week in English and Math to support student success. The S2S high school component expanded in 2023 to include both freshmen and sophomores. Parent Empowerment With the introduction of the FreedomSchool2/Scholar2Scholar program in 2022, Hannah began a parallel program with parents of enrolled students to better acquaint them with school policies and strategies to ensure that their students graduate and attend college. These quarterly meal focused meetings have continued on a quarterly basis throughout the 2022 and 2023 school year. These meetings have been augmented by periodic family night programs to foster increased family engagement.</Desc>

<Desc>ADVOCACY CULTURE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SAVE OUR CITY (SOC), a community coalition organized by the Hannah Project in fall 2023, formed in response to the Marin County Board of Supervisors' approval of a controversial 73-unit apartment complex at 825 Drake Avenue without sufficient community input. SOC opposed the project because of concerns about infrastructure neglect, gentrification, overdevelopment, safety, traffic, environmental impacts, and social equity. The coalition argued that applying SB 35's fast-track housing provisions to Marin City-one of the county's most racially and economically diverse communities-misused the law by concentrating more density in an area that already carries a disproportionate share of Marin County's affordable housing, while wealthier communities faced no comparable development burden. The SAVE OUR CITY coalition sought to stop the 825 Drake Avenue project through grassroots organizing, public protest, and legal action. Specifically, SOC: 1. Targeted project funding: In May 2023, Save Our City filed a lawsuit challenging the Marin County Board of Supervisors' approval of $40 million in tax-exempt municipal bonds for the project. Rather than directly challenge California's SB 35 fast-track law, SOC focused on the project's financial foundation. 2. Organized protests and petitions: The coalition mobilized residents through petitions, public meetings, and construction-site demonstrations. It also sought temporary restraining orders that delayed or paused early demolition work. 3. Built community and environmental support: SOC partnered with local organizations, including the Golden Gate Village Resident Council, and gained support from environmental advocates who criticized the project for overlooking infrastructure limits and risks to vulnerable residents. SAVE OUR CITY achieved partial success. 1. Bond Financing Struck Down: In late 2024, Marin County Superior Court Judge Stephen P. Freccero ruled in favor of Save Our City and invalidated $40 million in tax-exempt municipal bonds for the project. The court found that the Marin County Board of Supervisors had mistakenly concluded it lacked authority to deny the bonds under state fast-track housing laws. 2. Project Split Compromise: Because the lawsuit blocked only public financing-not the building permit-the developer, The Pacific Companies, continued construction. However, sustained legal and community pressure led to a major compromise. In 2025, the Board of Supervisors approved dividing the project between two sites: * Significant Reduction in Project Density: 825 Drake Avenue (Marin City): Downsized from 74 units to 42 units with 45 parking spaces. * Wealthier Community Forced to Absorb Affordable Housing:150 Shoreline Highway (Mill Valley/Tamalpais Valley): The remaining 32 units were relocated to this second site. 3. Amplified Systemic Housing Issues: Save Our City effectively exposed how fast-tracking laws (like SB 35) can be weaponized against marginalized enclaves, pushing Marin County officials to promise that future housing developments will feature significantly more neighborhood input. 2025 Parent University The Hannah Project's inaugural Parent University, held on April 19, 2025, brought parents and caregivers together for a full day of learning, connection, and empowerment. Keynote speaker JC Farr opened the program with Helping Parents Navigate the School System, providing families with guidance for understanding schools and advocating effectively for their children. Workshops addressed many of the challenges families face, including academic success, early intervention, special education and IEPs, immigrant families' educational rights, college pathways, effective parent-child communication, discipline and self-control, social-emotional development, screen and social-media safety, youth stress and anxiety, and substance-use prevention. Parent University connected families with educators, counselors, health professionals, and community organizations while providing practical tools they could use at home and in school. The event strengthened parents' confidence, expanded their access to valuable resources, and deepened partnerships among families, schools, and the community-laying a strong foundation for Parent University to become an annual Hannah Project initiative. Tam High Coalition/ Racial Equity Work The Hannah Project worked alongside ministers, parents, and other Marin City community leaders to encourage the Tamalpais Union High School District to create the Tamalpais High School Coalition. The Coalition was established to ensure that the voices and experiences of the Marin City community were included in shaping policies and practices that directly affected Black students and other students of color at Tam High. Following incidents of racism at the school, Hannah joined students, families, educators, and community partners in town halls and continuing conversations that centered student experiences, called for accountability, and identified solutions for creating a safer, more equitable, and inclusive school environment. Through the Coalition, the Hannah Project advocated for culturally responsive education, stronger academic and mentoring support, meaningful family engagement, and greater transparency and accountability in responding to racial incidents. This work reflects Hannah's longstanding commitment to ensuring that those most affected by educational inequities have a meaningful voice in the decisions intended to address them.</Desc>
