Program Service Accomplishments: Buffalo Initiative designed and developed a blended finance model intended to support the advancement of ultra-rare disease therapeutic programs through key translational and clinical milestones. Activities included financial modeling, stakeholder engagement with philanthropic and impact capital partners, and development of an investment framework combining philanthropic grants, donor-advised fund contributions, program-related investments, and mission-aligned catalytic capital. The organization engaged funders, family offices, foundations, and ecosystem partners to explore scalable financing solutions capable of supporting therapeutic development for diseases traditionally Buffalo Initiative developed the first publicly accessible patient-led rare disease therapeutic pipeline tracker designed to identify and map therapeutic programs being advanced by patient organizations. The initiative tracked more than 50 programs across multiple rare diseases and created visibility into a growing but historically fragmented segment of the rare disease development ecosystem. The project was intended to educate philanthropists, policymakers, researchers, and potential investors regarding the emerging role of patient communities in therapeutic innovation and to facilitate greater coordination and resource allocation within the field.
