The MPA, through our partnership with Customized Newspaper Advertising, also provides one order, one check, one bill advertising placement services for those who wish to reach the 6.9 million Michiganders who read a print or online newspaper each week to connect to their community. More often than not, MPA delivers more ad revenue to members than they pay in dues. Perhaps the most important function is that Michigan Press Association continues to serve as the one place in the state where publishers of all newspapers large or small can resolve common problems. Form 990, Part III, Line 1 The objectives of the Michigan Press Association are: - To promote the general interests of MPA members, improved editorial and business methods in the publishing of newspapers, the usefulness and influence of all newspapers, and maintain a high standard of ethics in the newspaper profession. - To cultivate constructive relationships and a fraternal spirit among members. - To defend free speech, to promote open and responsive government and to foster an informed citizenry. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6 The Association has more than 320 members. The membership includes 7 classes: Active, News Media Publication, Individual News Media, Emeritus, Affiliate, Student, and College. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 7a Only active members are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. All other classes of members have no voting rights. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11b The 990 is received by the organization's Executive Director who reviews the return for accuracy. Upon the Executive Director's approval, the 990 is made available to the Board of Directors. After the Board's comments of interest are addressed, the Executive Director signs and files the return. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c All directors are required to disclose any conflicts of interest and to notify the Board of any conflicts that may arise throughout the year. In addition, all directors are required to sign an annual agreement attesting to the conflict of interest policy. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15a The Executive Director's compensation is determined based on an annual review by the Board of Directors based on terms outlined in a letter of understanding between the Executive Director and the President. The President and the personnel committee review the Executive Director's current compensation, review goal achievement for the year, and adjust compensation accordngly. The MSAE compensation guide is also used for reference. The President notes the compensation plan during the annual audit process.
