All recipients came from financially challenged families. Each dream was individually tailored to the recipient's needs and interests, often on short notice due to changing medical circumstances. All applications must be accompanied by a medical form that documents the applicant's complex medical condition, which must meet the Foundation's eligibility criteria. The comprehensive five-part application is then reviewed by the Dream Committee. This multidisciplinary team includes a physician, two nurse practitioners, a pediatric ICU nurse, a transplant nurse, a healthcare attorney, a nurse scientist and professor, and a healthcare administrator. The committee ensures that each applicant meets medical and eligibility requirements, that the requested dream falls within the Foundation's mission and scope, and that the request poses no health or safety concerns. Because the majority of applications are submitted through children's hospitals, eligibility is typically easy to confirm. For direct referrals from parents, the required medical form must still be submitted, and the Foundation will contact the applicant's healthcare provider to verify the diagnosis and relevant information. The Foundation grant dreams to children of any age as well as to young adults with childhood-onset medical conditions.
