Per the SOW, Google has sole discretion to adjust and approve the Publisher Funding allocated to each News Publisher. Google provides all Publisher Funding directly to News Product Alliance (NPA). The organization confirms it maintains records to substantiate the following: Grant amounts: Disbursement records are maintained through a dedicated restricted escrow account (Bank of America x6029), established per contractual requirement and kept fully separate from NPAs operating funds. Bank statements and wire transfer records document each amount disbursed per publisher. Grantee eligibility: Eligibility criteria were jointly defined by NPA and Google and documented in the SOW. Eligible organizations were U.S.-based news publishers focused on next-generation audience engagement through AI integration. NPA administered an intake process, including application forms and a pre-sprint readiness assessment for each participating publisher. Selection criteria: Documented in the SOW (Activity #1). The process included targeted outreach, review of applicant submissions, and final selection with Googles approval. Maximum funding per publisher: $150,000 USD. Monitoring procedures: NPA monitored the use of funds through: (a) monthly coaching and mentorship sessions with each publisher; (b) individual and collective performance scorecards tracking audience growth and outcomes; (c) detailed accounting of the escrow account provided to Google within 10 business days of each disbursement, per contractual obligation; and (d) a final financial report to Google detailing all Publisher Funding distributions. Through the NPAi Co-Lab, NPA established the Audience Data Commons an open-source, shared schema for first-party audience data infrastructure to help newsrooms responsibly adopt AI and better understand and serve their audiences. NPA also supported C-suite leaders at news organizations across Latin America through a program in partnership with Google News Initiative focused on bridging the gap between AI strategy and execution. In partnership with Google News Initiative, NPA launched the GNI NPA AI-Powered Next Gen News Sprint, a program designed to support leading U.S. publishers in understanding next-generation audiences and testing AI-enabled approaches to reach and serve them. In 2025, NPA completed the publisher selection process, announced the 12 participating organizations at the NPA Summit, and established the required restricted Escrow Account to administer $1,800,000 in Publisher Funding with initial grant disbursements made to selected organizations. Full program implementation, including design sprints, mentorship, and reporting, is underway in 2026. Additionally, NPA published its 2025 State of Product Management in Journalism Census, documenting the link between strong product structures and improved revenue outcomes across the field.
