<MissionDesc>We save dogs from kill shelters across California and adopted 940 dogs in 2025 Some are seniors, some are abused, some are left on doorsteps with severe medical needs which we address (broken legs, heart murmurs, gunshot wounds). Overall, 2025 was a year of significant growth, increased community involvement, and continued commitment to animals with complex medical, behavioral, and placement needs. Many of the cases DPS accepted required substantial financial resources, extended periods of veterinary care, specialized treatment, transportation, foster placement, and organizational coordination. Despite these challenges, the organization continued to expand its partnerships, develop new programs, support underserved members of the community, and provide lifesaving care and permanent homes for animals that might otherwise have had limited options.</MissionDesc>

<Desc>During 2025, Doggie Protective Services (DPS Rescue) continued to expand its lifesaving, community outreach, foster, medical, and shelter-support programs while taking on several significant and complex rescue cases. One of our most significant accomplishments was being requested by Animal Control to accompany them onto a property containing more than 70 dogs and provide leadership and assistance with the rescue operation. DPS took more than 35 of the dogs into our own program and coordinated with other rescue organizations to place the remaining dogs, ensuring that the animals received appropriate care and were moved into safe environments. DPS continued operating a small Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for community cats and remained actively involved in assisting animals whose owners or communities lacked the resources necessary to provide adequate care. Our organization continued to accept animals with significant and often life-threatening medical needs. One dog required lifesaving liver-shunt surgery, an extremely delicate and invasive procedure with significant risks and costs. Other challenging medical cases included Gogurt, a six-week-old puppy who entered our program with a severe skin condition. His diagnosis required approximately eight months of consultations and evaluations, including specialists at UC Davis and consultations with veterinary specialists throughout the country. Once his condition was finally diagnosed and stabilized, he was able to be placed in an appropriate permanent home.</Desc>

<Desc>Roadie, a four-month-old puppy who was struck by a vehicle, required more than four surgeries and approximately eight to nine months of rehabilitation before he was fully healed and able to be adopted. Bacon Bits, a senior Labrador Retriever, entered our program with an abscess and significant dental problems and required approximately four to five months of medical treatment before he was healthy enough for placement. Bob Marley developed seizures shortly after arriving at DPS and required approximately seven months of extensive veterinary evaluation and treatment to determine potential causes, stabilize his condition, and ultimately prepare him for adoption. We also responded to a situation in Southern California involving a mother dog, eight newborn puppies, and three adult dogs who had been abandoned in a backyard. DPS coordinated the rescue and transportation of the animals to Northern California, arranged necessary veterinary care and grooming, and cared for the mother and puppies for approximately eight weeks before they were placed in permanent homes. DPS continued to assist with large-scale neglect and hoarding situations. In one case, approximately 2030 dogs were living in a vehicle, and DPS was called upon to assist with the rescue and placement of the majority of the dogs.</Desc>

<Desc>We also responded to a case involving a dog whose owner had become the subject of national news because of serious criminal activity involving crimes against law enforcement. At the request of a Northern California shelter, DPS agreed to take responsibility for the dog and provide housing and care while legal and ownership matters were resolved. Approximately three months later, the dog was formally released to DPS and was able to be placed. A significant area of our work continued to be community support. DPS maintained an ongoing program assisting unhoused individuals and families who were unable to consistently obtain food for their companion animals. Through donated resources, we distributed pet food on a monthly basis and developed relationships within the community that allowed volunteers, donors, and other organizations to participate in providing assistance. We continued strengthening our professional relationship with the San Jose Animal Care and Control agency, becoming one of its primary and most committed rescue partners and consistently assisting with the placement of dogs from the shelter. DPS also maintained active relationships with more than 25 animal shelters and municipalities throughout California from which we rescue animals. Our longstanding partnership with Pet Food Express also continued in 2025. This relationship, which has now extended for approximately 18 years, allowed DPS to conduct ongoing community adoption events in the Palo Alto area and continue connecting homeless dogs and cats with permanent families. We continued holding bi-weekly Meet and Greet adoption events, providing the community with opportunities to interact directly with adoptable animals and allowing dogs and cats who may not present well in photographs to connect with potential adopters. DPS also participated in the Salesforce convention in San Francisco, providing therapy and stress-relief interactions through our dogs. Our organization participated in the three-day event for more than 10 hours each day, giving attendees an opportunity to interact with the dogs while promoting the importance of animal welfare and rescue.</Desc>
