From late 2025 through mid-2026, an affordability crisis in our country, and especially California, drove a sharp increase in dog surrenders. Our small, all-volunteer rescue saw intake more than double, overwhelming our limited capacity. Our director of finance, who also serves as operations coordinator, worked seven days a week during this crisis. By March 2026, he suffered a diagnosed medical burnout and was hardly able to work through June 2026. As an all-volunteer organization, we had no other staff with access to financial accounts or knowledge to prepare the filing, nor budget for a paid CPA. Upon the director's return in late June 2026, the return was prepared and filed. We have planned cross-training to prevent recurrence. The late filing resulted from circumstances beyond our control - a national crisis that caused a key volunteer's medically documented burnout during the filing window. We acted with ordinary business care and filed as soon as possible.
