PA Humanities provides funding, through partnerships with state and national funders, along with hands-on coaching as communities move through the four-phase process over approximately two years. The result is a unique and actionable plan grounded in what matters most to local residents. In 2025, we worked with six communities: Etna, the Venango Area, Port Allegany, Mansfield, Honesdale, and Johnsonburg-Ridgway. Line 4C: TEEN LIBRARY PROGRAMS: Youth-Led Humanities (YLH) is a statewide initiative that supports young people in developing social-emotional, leadership, and critical thinking skills through meaningful engagement with the humanities. Launched in 2023, YLH builds on more than a decade of success from PA Humanities' award-winning Teen Reading Lounge program, which demonstrated the power of youth-led discussion, creativity, and reflection. YLH expands these opportunities beyond book based activities to include a broad range of humanities experiences, while also investing in the adults who support youth-artists, teachers, librarians, and youth practitioners through coaching, skill-building, and shared learning. The program strengthens youth voice, fosters community connection, and ensures high quality, humanities-rich experiences across Pennsylvania. In 2025, PA Humanities supported 17 libraries and 5 out-of-school sites, providing funding and training for youth-serving professionals as well as leadership opportunities for participating youth. Line 4D: Other Program Services: Voices of History: Voices of History is a first-of-its-kind statewide initiative that documents and celebrates the stories, family histories, struggles, and triumphs of Black Pennsylvanians in the 20th and 21st centuries. Launched in 2024 with a special event featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson, the project began its community-based work in Pittsburgh. In 2025, the initiative expanded to Erie and Scranton, where resident story circles were held in partnership with local organizations. These gatherings produced dozens of new videos capturing and preserving the lived experiences of Black Pennsylvanians across the Commonwealth. Rain Poetry: Rain Poetry is a statewide initiative that weaves together literacy development, the humanities, and creative placemaking to spark learning and celebrate community. In collaboration with Poet Laureates and teaching artists, young people explore the art of haiku-writing original poems inspired by curated themes. These poems are then installed in public spaces using a special water-activated solution that remains invisible until it meets rain or a splash of water, when the words appear as if by magic. The project has already brought poetry to life in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Johnstown and, in 2025, expanded to Reading and culminated in a special celebration at the State Library in Harrisburg. To support even wider participation, PA Humanities developed a Rain Poetry Toolkit and launched a special grant opportunity that empowers communities across the Commonwealth to create their own Rain Poetry installations. Special Projects: Wingspan: Wingspan is a grant initiative launched as part of PA Humanities' 50th anniversary, created to strengthen organizations engaged in community-based humanities work. PA Humanities awarded two-year grants of $50,000-$100,000 to 24 small and midsize groups, to support programming, general operations, marketing and communications, staff development, and capacity-building. Grantees also participate in the Wingspan Learning Community, which began in February 2024 and provides ongoing opportunities for shared learning and collaboration. In 2025, PA Humanities hosted a two-day gathering that brought all Wingspan grantees together to learn, reflect, and exchange ideas as part of their continuing growth and peer learning. Project Ready: Project READY is a training program for Pennsylvania librarians in partnership with the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. PA Humanities and OCL concluded its first Project Ready cohort in 2025 with special training sessions and an evaluation report on the program's impact. Let's Rise: 50th Anniversary video project: In celebration of its 50th anniversary, PA Humanities partnered with Emmy-winning filmmaker Kelly Dessoye to produce Let's Rise, a video series showcasing how Pennsylvanians use the humanities to strengthen their communities. Beginning in September 2025, themed sets of videos were released monthly that feature PA Humanities' partners across the state. The project highlights the impact of the humanities and the urgent need for greater public investment. The Window Keeper: In honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, PA Humanities released The Window Keeper, a powerful poem written by Philadelphia Poet Laureate Yolanda Wisher. Animated by digital artist Naeem Murdic and supported by PA Humanities and generous donors, the poem is an inspiring reflection on the importance of democracy. PA Humanities and ArtPhilly originally commissioned it for America250PA's 2024 National Convening of States and Partners. The animated video was released in 2025 and showcases the interplay between words, art, and technology, demonstrating the power of creative collaboration to spark meaningful dialogue. Marketing & Communications: Research: PA Humanities Discovery Project PA Humanities partnered with Drexel University to map, network, and celebrate the wonderfully rich humanities landscape. Called the PA Humanities Discovery Project, this initiative kicked off in 2022-2023 with a statewide written survey and focus groups examining the work of humanities practitioners during the pandemic to keep people connected and inspired, while encouraging resilience and recovery. 2025 activities included finalizing the final report and summary one-sheet and working with a designer to create and print written copies. A micro-site to house the Discovery Project and its reports was developed in collaboration with a designer and web developer. PA CultureCheck: PA CultureCheck is a research and advocacy initiative that documents and amplifies the experiences, strengths, and concerns of Pennsylvania's cultural sector. With nearly 1,000 survey responses over the past three years, the 2025 release continues to track statewide post-pandemic recovery and local impact. It also addresses federal disruptions threatening the health of our sector and communities. The findings are a clear call to invest in the creativity and impact of Pennsylvania's cultural organizations, so that our local economies grow, our communities thrive, and our well-being is improved. This work aims to strengthen and mobilize communities. The 2025 PA CultureCheck includes responses from community artists, culture bearers, nonprofit leaders, librarians, historians, curators, and educators from 401 organizations statewide, paired with insights from small group conversations in virtual listening sessions. The data in this year's report was gathered and compiled before the new federal administration began cutting vital funding for the arts and humanities across Pennsylvania. In response, we fielded supplemental questions focused on these emerging disruptions to ensure a complete and timely picture of the urgent challenges ahead. Cultural Dynamics: Launched in November 2024 by the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, in partnership with PA Humanities, Drexel University's Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, and Creative Philadelphia, Cultural Dynamics is a collaborative, community-driven effort to shape the City of Philadelphia's first Cultural Plan. The process convened artists, cultural workers, institutions, funders, residents, and civic partners to understand what Philadelphia's cultural sector needs to thrive-and to mobilize the community toward collective action.
