Form 990, Part III, Line 4a Program Accomplishments The College of Engineering and Technology at Virginia State University (VSU) has hosted several impactful events throughout the year, supporting students who were funded by grants from the Virginia State University Research Foundation (VSURF), either during the tax year or in previous years. Below are highlights of key initiatives: NASA H2O Project (2023-2024 Academic Year) We continued our support for the NASA H2O project, an initiative connecting VSU students with NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover scientists. This program allows students to analyze the rover's activities on Mars, particularly in its search for microbial life. One standout participant, Justin Terry, led the NASA H2O project before graduating from the Computer Engineering program. Justin is now employed as a Marine System Engineer at Caterpillar Inc. NASA Student Rocket Launch Challenge (2023-2024) In a historic achievement, VSU assembled its first-ever team to compete in the NASA Student Rocket Launch Challenge, a prestigious national rocketry competition. The Trojan Takeoff Team was one of 48 university teams selected to participate in the 2023-2024 challenge. The task was to design, build, and launch a high-powered rocket to an altitude of 4,000 to 5,000 feet. The competition took place in Huntsville, Alabama, in April 2024. First International Hackathon VSU hosted its First International Hackathon, which brought together students from Virginia State University, National Taipei University (NTPU), and the Technical University of Moldova (TUM). This global event provided students with an invaluable cross-cultural learning experience. A total of 85 students participated, forming 15 teams. Of these, 12 teams submitted final solutions that demonstrated innovation, creativity, and technical expertise. The competition was judged by a panel of seven experts who provided insightful feedback to the participants. Three teams emerged as winners. This event had a lasting impact, with students proudly sharing their certificates of participation (signed by the three deans) on social media.
