Most of the Society's work is done by our members who visit their neighbors in need in their homes and help in the best way possible, mainly providing financial assistance for rent to prevent evictions, or for utility bills to prevent disconnection, or assist with other financial emergency needs. No work of charity is foreign to the Society. The charity includes any form of help that alleviates suffering or deprivation but promotes human dignity and personal integrity in all their dimensions. Vincentians are not social workers. On Home Visits, Vincentians do not merely "stand with" the poor but we sit with them; We listen to them and we pray with them. We seek to help them in the best way possible. We serve our neighbors, seeking to understand the troubles of those we serve as we would a brother or a sister, and we form relationships based on trust and friendship. We walk with our neighbors in their time of trouble. Schedule G, Part II, Line 2 The Friends of the Poor Walk is the Society's main annual fundraiser held each September. Donations are collected and in the normal business course of our charitable work, the donations are paid to local persons in need of financial assistance in order to prevent utility cut off, evictions, and other emergency needs such as rent, utilities, health expenses, car repairs, etc. There is no exchange of goods at the event. Participants are encouraged to give donations as they can.
