The Board of Directors has interpreted New York State Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (NYPMIFA) as requiring preservation of the fair value of the original gift as of the gift date of the donor-restricted endowment funds absent explicit donor instructions to the contrary. Any remaining portion of the donor-restricted endowment fund that is not classified in permanently restricted net assets is classified as temporarily restricted net assets until those amounts are appropriated for expenditure by the Board of Directors in a manner consistent with the standard prudence prescribed by NYPMIFA. The purpose of these endowment funds is to provide investment income to support the Institute's mission. Schedule D, Part X, Line 2 The institute is exempt from taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code and accordingly, no provision for incomes taxes has been reflected in the accompanying financial statements. US GAAP provides guidance on the financial statement recognition and measurement for income tax positions that the Institute has taken or expects to take in the Institute's income tax returns. Organizations take many tax positions relative to tax laws, including those taken in determining whether tax is due, a refund is owed, a tax return needs to be filed, or the characterization of income as taxable (for example, unrelated business income) or nontaxable.
