In our role of support for the local boards, we provide important tax deductibility to corporate and private donors interested in the stewardship, conservation & sustainable use of MD's forest resources. We have grown our mission in recent years to include the promotion and management of several large forestry programs funded by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. 1 0 1328981 0 1375719 $1,328,981 were expenses associated with the Healthy Forests, Healthy Water initiative as part of a Maryland Department of Natural Resources grant agreement. We managed 5 separate grants for the state in 2024. The Foundation contracts with natural resources consultants and tree planting contractors, to implement tree planting projects on private land in conjunction with Maryland Forest Service staff. These initiatives are intended to deliver quantifiable nutrient & sediment reductions for water quality purposes. The Foundation engages the local volunteer Forestry Boards by providing training and technical assistance that allows them to document the projects' implementation and to monitor their success. We paid out $1,289,007 to tree planting and tree maintenance contractors across the state. The remaining expenses include $37,064 for Foundation management and accounting and $2,910 in mileage reimbursements. 65522 61409 78311 We administer the financial side of the grant programs of the Maryland Urban & Community Forestry Committee (MUCFC) and the Maryland Dept of Transportation (MDOT) Urban Tree grant program. The MUCFC grant program gave out 24 grants in 9 counties worth $16,511. The MDOT distributed 25 grants in 12 counties worth $44,898. MUCFC also spent $4,113 to administer an award program for municipalities that meet the tree care requirements for receiving award plaques. The revenue was a grant from MDOT of $78,311. 53857 0 98094 The Foundation launched the Urban Forestry Careers Camp at the University of Maryland's College Park campus. We hosted 20 high school students for a week in July. The cost of room, board and field trips was $24,532. Camp coordinator was paid $4,000. College students majoring in Natural Resources acted as counselors and were paid $590 each for a total of $2,950. Materials/supplies/website exps were $2,452. Planning and promotion expenses for the brand new camp was $19,923. The terms of the Fellowship are from oct 1 to July 31 of the next year, a 10-month period. In 2024, 4 college students received $6,000 each from Jan-July 2024 and 4 newly appointed students received $3,000 each from Oct-Dec 2024. We have a detailed set of qualifications that must be met before a college student is eligible to apply for a Fellowship. There is a 7 person Selection Committee that reviews all applications and chooses the final 4 students based upon ranked voting. The money for the grants comes from the MD DNR who prescribes the amount to be paid to the Fellows and the associated expenses. The head of the Forest Service within DNR is on the Selection Committee. We report extensively to DNR on the accomplishments of the Fellows and the status of expenditures against grant funding. Similar to our long-running Natural Resources Careers Camp, high school students spend a week learning from industry professionals and college professors and are treated to many hands-on learning experiences and field trips. The camp was funded by a $94,094 grant from the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources and was hosted by the Univ of MD's College of Agriculture & Natural Resources.
