<PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>Young Writers Project's mission is to inspire, mentor, publish, and promote young writers and artists. Young Writers Project (YWP) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit that began in 2006 in Burlington, VT. All programming is free for youth ages 13 to 19. Most of our community members are from Vermont and around the Northeast, although young people find us on the web or through their teachers and word-of-mouth, and we welcome them from across the United States and other countries. Our website, youngwritersproject.org, is the heart of YWP, a creative online community of teen writers and visual artists who post to their own blogs and interact with each other through supportive comments and online forums, receive encouragement and mentoring from YWP staff and alumni advisors, and submit their work for publication. We receive more than 10,000 submissions on the site each year, and from these, we select the best work for publication with our Vermont media partners.</PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>YWP website: We launched our redesigned website in August 2023. The site, youngwritersproject.org, meets web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG) and greatly improves the user experience. It is powered by a stable, updated Drupal 10 platform. We conducted online surveys of the website over the past year, and the YWP community responded with top marks for the site's accessibility, user-friendliness, and design. Some 3,700 active users post, comment, and participate in challenges and contests.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>YWP Community and Projects -YWP Community: Teens who join Young Writers Project (YWP) bond over the writing and visual art they post to our website, youngwritersproject.org. YWP receives some 10,000 submissions each year from youth, ages 13-19. Since the spring of 2024, we have reserved all new accounts for this age group, as teens are our central focus. Youth-powered projects: Tiny Writes, the YWP Book Club, the Great Writers Challenge, and podcasts are among the highlights on YWP's interactive website. The online Book Club, where community members post reviews and recommendations, has become one of the most popular features of our site. YWP Alumni Advisors: Our writers and artists are supported and mentored by our staff and a team of five YWP Alumni Advisors, all of whom first joined YWP during their middle and high school years. The advisors are Jadyn Mardy, a Tufts University senior; Kevin Huang, an engineer and photographer; Sawyer Fellows, a Temple University freshman; Sam Aikman, a Pratt Institute junior; and Zinnia Hansen, a University of Washington senior.Work-study: Our internships help young people build their skills and their resumes with hands-on experience in editing, publishing, communications, and related disciplines. Over the past year, YWP's publications coordinator worked with a teen intern, helping her edit a book of her writing and prepare it for publication. Alumni Advisor Sam Aikman also interned with us over the summer to create a series of online workshops.Special Projects: We partnered with Sundog Poetry, a Vermont nonprofit, to help launch the first Vermont Youth Poet Laureate program and a related illustration contest. Harmony Devoe was named poet laureate in the spring, and three YWP writers Grace Batsie, Maelyn Slavik, and Roma Vallabhaneni were among the 10 finalists. YWP's Evvi Tower-Pierce won the contest to illustrate one of Harmony's poems, "Womane," for a commemorative broadside print. The Reuben Jackson Award: YWP's staff and board named an award in memory of our friend and board member Reuben Jackson who passed away Feb. 16, 2024. The award honors the kind, creative, and generous spirit Reuben brought to YWP as a workshop leader, mentor, and published poet. Geri Kayingo, 16, of Towson, MD, who often attended Reuben's YWP workshops, received the award in June in recognition of her own commitment to writing and her support of her peers at YWP. ArtSpace: Since YWP launched our online art studio in 2022, and with the recent addition of a homepage Art Gallery on our redesigned website, submissions of visual art have increased dramatically. ArtSpace also includes weekly art challenges, art contests, and our monthly Great Artists Challenge, which introduces the YWP community to contemporary art. School Connections: YWP is a free, creative resource for middle and high school teachers. Teachers, especially those most familiar with YWP in Vermont and the Northeast, encourage their students to respond to our weekly challenges and seasonal contests.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Publications - The Anthology Series: Every fall, Young Writers Project publishes a book of the year's best writing, photos, and art, selected by YWP editors from 10,000 annual submissions to our website. In the fall of 2023, we published our 14th anthology, and in September 2024, we published Anthology 15.The Voice: Our digital magazine showcases YWP's remarkable writers and visual artists every month. It is published and presented directly on our website.Media Partners: Each week through the year, VTDigger.org publishes a YWP writing and visual art feature online. We publish a page of writing and art monthly during the school year in the Rutland Herald and the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus. And our poets also appear in Seven Days' quarterly Kids VT magazine.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
