Santa Cruz along with most of the far western periphery of Rio de Janeiro is a poor neighborhood with many social problems. In this informal orphanage a lady and a group of supporters care for anywhere between 20 and 50 children who were abandoned found on the streets or under only marginal precarious care by their legal guardians.
