Called "Earn and Learn," it combines a scholarship towards a semicha program, as well as training to become a Certified Food Service Mashgiach, as well as helping the shlichus of the Berkeley California Chabad House. The semicha course and certification is the renowned successful Crown heights online program under the auspices of Rabbi Barber, called, "Leman Yilmedu." While the learning goes at the pace of the student, it has the advantage of a required one hour Zoom shiur Sunday through Thursday. This is a special course that has been developed for buchrim, and includes students from around the globe, but with the advantage of online mentoring by Rabbi Barber and his staff. In addition, the Rabbis from the Vaad and Chabad Berkeley are available for direct in person support. But what makes this additionally exciting is that while the course covers Taruvous Mixtures) and Basar b cholov (Milk and Meat), the students will be seeing how these learnings are used in the everyday world of kashrus. They will be trained to be mashgichim at the University of California Berkeley Kosher Cafeteria. And they will be paid while they learn! But because learning is their primary responsibility, they will not be required to work as a mashgiach more than 20 hours per week, and usually no more than 4 hours per day. This relaxed schedule also allows them to participate in Miftsoyim activities. This mean a weekly Beis Hamedrash at the Chabad house open to the community, plus developing indicial chavrusas with community members. Of course, Shabboses at the community Chabad House in Berkeley , with their full meals, kiddushes and farbrengens, gives them even more opportunities to meet and affect even more people who always come. Since there are over 20,000 Jews in Berkeley and 250,000 Jews and over 60 Shluchim in the San Francisco Bay Area, there is plenty to do if they want to. But the only requirement is to help out with the Beis Hamedrash, 3 Shabboses a month, and one extra Morning Minyan at Chabad House and a few hours of general Miftsoyim assistance All of this comes paid with a furnished apartment in the newly renovated Chabad House, as well as meal and transportation allowances(either a car or excellent public transit passes) The semicha and Chabad House parts of the program are under Rabbi Yehudah Ferris, Rabbi Mendy Blank, Rabbi Yehudah Leib Welton, and many more in the community.
