This summer camp is different than any other program in the area. By creating safe spaces for children through full-day care where meals are provided, we strive to achieve better outcomes in education, health, and economic prosperity. Our program features healing-centered programming designed to promote positive childhood experiences, a secure environment that allows parents to remain employed, and well-compensated staff who reflect the varying experiences of the children served. Staff members possess relevant skills in teaching, social work, and counseling.Our activities include daily age-specific and age-diverse programming focused on play, creativity, movement, rest, and connection. Participants enjoy field trips, community engagement, and activities that encourage mindfulness and restorative practices. Unlike other summer programs that may exclude children with behavioral challenges, the Mancos Summer Hub intentionally reaches out to families of kids with high needs and hires and trains staff to love, care for, and effectively serve these children and their families.Insights gained from the Summer Hub will influence community health dynamics for generations. Reduced stress among families, caregivers, and youth leads to better-regulated nervous systems, resulting in improved academic performance, higher graduation rates, better health outcomes, and a more engaged workforce. As the community recognizes the value of regulated nervous systems, these benefits will extend throughout our community. 19044 After extensive conversation with individuals, families and service providers, a gap was identified in the basic needs support needed vs the support provided. Knowing that basic needs can be the barrier to getting to school, being able to learn and getting to work and being engaged at work, we launched a pilot program to help connect individuals in Mancos with resources to meet their most basic needs. Provided 8 instances of basic needs support to individuals and families with basic needs. Were learning things like: most of the people with the needs are already working one or more jobs, often have children with medical or behavioral needs, and/or are single parents. We are also learning that vehicle support is crucial and allows people to continue to work and get to school. Tutoring support is showing promising results: it has resulted in a student jumping multiple grade levels to now be at grade level with peers and needing fewer supports at school. 3327 Listened to community input that overwhelmingly shared we are a desert for indoor recreating, creating, and gathering spaces. We learned that unless one has means, economic flexibility, and a reliable working vehicle, many services are unreachable. Everything from a teen center to recreation space and healthcare can be out of reach. This was particularly shared by families with young children.
