Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Our organization is very small, as is the board, so it's easy to ensure there are no conflicts of interest. One of the three board members is hired as a contract employee to run most aspects of the organization, but the other two board members set the compensation and review compensation and hours biannually to ensure it's still in the best interest of the organization to hire the third board member / founder to run the organization's programs and fundraising. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 In 2024, we hired Rebecca Villarreal as an independent contractor to serve as the Executive Director of Books from Birth. Rebecca is also the founder and Board President and had been running the nonprofit as a volunteer since 2020. Due to budget constraints, she suggested a very low starting salary of $10 hourly but recused herself from the Board vote on the subject. The other Board members approved the arrangement, with the express intent of monitoring the total hours worked bi-annually, with the hope of annual raises until a fair market value hourly wage was being paid, as researched by the Board members in advance of the meeting. Fair market compensations were estimated based on wages reported on national surveys of nonprofit leadership positions for small nonprofits.
