A majority of people request Zoom and hybrid mediations which are more labor intensive for staff. Therefore, the DRC-MC cannot conduct as many mediations as it did when all mediations were conducted in-person prior to the pandemic. Despite these challenges, the DRC-MC still conducted mediations that affected over 3,200 individuals, families, businesses and/or governmental entities in FY 2023-2024. In addition to removing a significant number of cases from the Montgomery County court dockets through settlements, DRC-MC mediators also prevented community disputes from escalating by helping people to peacefully resolve their disputes, rebuild relationships and restore communications. Significantly, the DRC-MC provided no cost (i.e., pro bono) mediations for victims of child abuse/neglect, low-income families, and victims of domestic violence who could not afford to pay mediation fees. During FY2023-2024, DRC-MC mediators completed over 270 pro bono mediations. Peer Mediation programs, which the DRC-MC helped to establish at three (3) Montgomery County high schools, enabled trained student mediators to assist their peers to peacefully resolve disputes through mediation. DRC-MC Volunteers contributed over $216,000 worth of volunteer time to the community in FY2023-2024. 126354 0 22060 Training/Education and Outreach:A large number of people seek mediation training via Zoom and this type of training is more time intensive for staff/trainers/mentors because of complicated logistics planning and technical assistance required. Despite these challenges, the DRC-MC still provided/sponsored over 200 hours of mediation related training to over 800 individuals. During the FY 2023-2024, the DRC-MC (1) conducted 40 Hour General Mediation Training classes; (2) Advanced Family Mediation Training; (3) conducted in-person two (2)day Peace Camps for students in Grades 3-12; (4) conducted multi-session conflict resolution training sessions for Justice System Referred youngsters and their parents; (5) conducted a two (2) day conflict resolution training program for high school student interns in the EfTA program; (6) provided and/or sponsored custom designed conflict resolution training programs for CASA, Angel Reach, SHSU Mediation and Legal Services Office, etc.; (7) developed and implemented a Friends for Peace conflict resolution training program for high school students from Cyprus (8) held the Conflict Resolution Bookmark Art Contest in which nearly 1,500 students in grades K-8 participated; and (9) distributed nearly 18,000 bookmarks supporting peaceful conflict resolution across Montgomery County.
