It is a translation training project and includes work on translating 19th century Hawaiian language manuscripts into English and re-formatting the Hawaiian into current written language usage. The focus of these efforts is primarily training researchers, editors and translators. The efforts are currently producing on-line material available and useable by educators, students at all grade levels, and the public. The project includes 2 mentors-in-training, and 12 translators-in-training; all under the support and tutelage of Dr. Puakea Nogelmeier, PHD, Professor Emeritus, University of Hawaii. The project also includes curriculum design available to school administrators, Hawaiian language teachers, and the general public. The curriculum design centers around important Hawaii events and people of the 19th century. This is an ongoing project funded primarily by the Native Hawaiian Education Program (NHEP) in 2024. 286707 0 330356 This project is named Na Hunahuna Ike. Using the 19th century Memoirs of John Papa Ii, the objective of this project is to significantly increase the competency of eight Hawaiian language translators. In addition to training translators and editors, the project will result in publishing the Memoirs of John Papa Ii in both Hawaiian and English. That book is expected to be a valuable resource for researchers, educators and the general public. This is an ongoing project running through early 2026, and is primarily funded by a federal Administration for Native Americans (ANA) grant. 25955 0 43313 This Project is named Ke Kumu Aupuni. Awaiaulu's trainees spent many years assembling, translating and editing Samuel Kamakau's 6 years of articles in 19th century Hawaiian language newspapers. His writings include the beginning and political rise of Kamehameha I, and the negotiations and battles that unified the Kingdom of Hawaii into a single Hawaii government. In December 2022, Awaiaulu's work culminated in publishing Kamakau's writings as "Ke Kumu Aupuni: The Foundation of Hawaiian Nationhood". This book is presented in both Hawaiian and English. It is a valuable resource for researchers, educators and the general public. The initial edition of Ke Kumu Aupuni sold out in 2023 and a 2nd edition was published. An audio version of Ke Kumu Aupuni is also under production. 61183 0 30000 This project is named Kakoi. This project involves two trainees adapting material from "Ke Kumu Aupuni" to prepare a 100 page, illustrated, historical novel on the exploits of Kamehameha. This will be targeted to young adults, providing them with more knowledge of Hawaiian history. 8794 0 62852 Other translation projects include translations and training of translators; and also includes final reading and editing of material developed during Translation Training (described above) for publication. All comments on the draft were considered and incorporated in the final Form 990, as appropriate. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c Awaiaulu has a written conflict of interest policy. A significant aspect of that policy requires each of the Board Members and management personnel to annually complete and sign a conflict of interest disclosure form. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The Board of Directors appoints a Board Member compensation committee to review and recommend annual salaries and yearly bonuses for the Executive Director and the Program Director. The committee reviews available comparable compensation for other Hawaii not-for-profits and evaluates the work performed and value provided by the employees. The entire Board reviews and approves the recommendations of the compensation committee.
