<PurposeOfGrantTxt>CHATS offers the Horse Boy (therapeutic approach) and Movement Method (academic approach) program, a neuroscience-based equine assisted intervention, for people with autism and other neuro-diversities that achieves social, behavioral, and academic goals through kinetic learning and repatterning the brain and calming the nervous system through nature, movement, and the help of an equine partner. CHATS equine therapy involves specific movements on horseback which activate the learning receptors of the brain and create physical, mental, and emotional states that allow the release of oxytocin which serves to relax, calm, and reduce interfering behaviors. This can lead to fewer behavioral meltdowns and increased engagement in learning activities, social interaction, and communication. The proposed projects include training a new horse and offers therapy play dates to autistic children with families that do not have the financial means to provide this alternative to traditional therapy.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<PurposeOfGrantTxt>Provides advocates that ensure abused and neglected children, along with their parents, are offered and receive timely services that support psychological growth, physical health, mental well-being, education, and safety while under the court's care. Advocates monitor the case throughout the judicial process to ensure the voices of these children are considered in the court's placement decisions. An Advocate typically has one or two cases at a time allowing them to devote time for meeting and interviewing all parties involved in a child's case. Colonial CASA's Youth Mentoring program trains volunteers to help youth aged 10 to 18 develop skills for successful transitions to adulthood. Mentors encourage and support skill development in the following competency areas: academics, career preparation and employment, self-advocacy, health and mental well-being, as well as assisting in applying for after-school jobs, opening bank accounts, budgeting, visiting college campuses.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

The purpose of this grant is to assist as many needy families who live in York County and Poquoson as many times per year as resources will allow - being open on Wednesdays from 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm for food distribution. Also, to support Social Services monetarily and by stocking a small food pantry to help their clients at times we are not open. In 2024, there were a total of 6086 client visits.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<PurposeOfGrantTxt>For over thirteen years NATASHA House (NHI) has been on the front lines of the Viriginia Peninsula's response to the intractable nature of homelessness in low-income female-headed families. NHI's HomeMaker Program (HMP) addresses the challenges of homeless women and their children by providing a safe and stable place to live and by concentrating on their immediate individual needs first. The organization then provides education, counseling, and practical experience so that NHI mothers improve their physical, emotional, and social well-being, develop or enhance skills that promote personal and financial independence, and secure permanent housing which leads to a lifework plan for self-sufficiency. This grant aims to provide an iCAFE Learning Lab to provide the students with individualized on-line modules in math, reading, and writing. The individualized attention includes mentor sessions, a pedagogical method proven effective with learners who need more time to absorb concepts.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<PurposeOfGrantTxt>The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office "Shop with the Sheriff" Program began in December 2001. The program strives to serve those children in the York County and the City of Poquoson who, through extenuating circumstances, may not receive any gifts during the holiday season. York-Poquoson Sheriff Deputy Officers and Elementary School Guidance Counselors are asked to submit potential participants and approximately 100 students are chosen each year. The event is usually held at a local store, and children are teamed up with a deputy to assist with their shopping. Santa Claus makes an appearance and refreshments are served. It is hoped to foster a positive experience with law enforcement personnel for these children.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

Soundscapes was established to address the issues facing local youth, including poor academic performance, violence, poverty, and the effects of these issues on the community. Soundscapes uses music as a tool to provide positive development opportunities for young people from second grade through age 25 across Hampton Roads through a variety of programs. Soundscapes has three free daily after-school programs at Title I elementary schools and free summer camps. Also, the Peninsula Youth Orchestra and Peninsula Youth Jazz Band, are made accessible to all students through its sliding-scale tuition structure ensuring no qualified student is turned away for financial reasons. Soundscapes addresses the need for meaningful, skill-building music opportunities by offering accessible, high-quality youth ensembles that help students grow life skills through music and social engagements.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<PurposeOfGrantTxt>The purpose of this grant is to support the York-Poquoson K9 Unit which increases the rate of success for apprehending criminals, as well as locating and eliminating dangerous illegal drugs and weapons. Each canine has a special function that makes them an asset to the community. K9 Grit and K9 Bado are patrol/narcotics canines, K9 Ghost and K9 Nitro are patrol/explosive canines, and K9 Sarge is a skilled single-purpose tracking canine. This means that the canines are able to track/apprehend criminals, track/locate missing endangered persons, locate hidden narcotics and firearms, and locate evidentiary articles that can lead to a successful suspect identification and prosecution. The K9 Handlers that train and deploy with these dogs everyday must be ready to respond to any call. To serve approximately 72,000 citizens of York County, as well as 12,000 citizens of Poquoson special food, medical and vet care, specific equipment and training environments, and education courses are required</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<PurposeOfGrantTxt>The York County Meals on Wheels program was created to ensure that any homebound York County resident in need will receive one hot meal Monday thru Friday including holidays. The rising costs of food, contract labor, and supplies makes it extremely challenging to provide a variety of good, but healthy food, while keeping the costs of individual meals affordable. Currently, we are charged $5.90 for each meal. However, recipients are only charged $3.00 per meal because we subsidize the cost of each meal. For those recipients who are financially unable to pay, their meals are provided at no cost. In 2024, over 8,100 meals were delivered with a wellness check. In 2024, over 675 monthly wellness checks were completed to York County seniors along with a meal. More importantly, Meals on Wheels helped seniors to remain in their homes and live as independent members of society, assists in maintaining their health, manage their own affairs, and live their lives with dignity.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<PurposeOfGrantTxt>Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads (YVCHR) engages youth in team-based service experiences that build life and work skills while inspiring a lifetime ethic of service. This is accomplished by providing youth with truly impactful volunteer experiences through a wide array of service opportunities that positively impact the community at large. Our programming provides social connectedness and a sense of belonging and purpose; youth also gain awareness of local needs while actively playing a role in creating communities defined by compassion, selflessness, and respect for others. Since youth volunteers are recruited from public, private, and homeschool populations, participants reflect the racial and socioeconomic diversity of the community. This rich mix of participants adds depth to each young person's service experience and enhances their cross-cultural competencies, teamwork skills, and civic responsibility.</PurposeOfGrantTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>The YCVA annually invites local organizations to complete an Application-for-Funding for their programs that provide services to York County, VA or Poquoson, VA residents. Each grant application is reviewed by the Treasurer's Grant Review Committee, which is made up of the Treasurer and at least three volunteer members of the organization. Grants are reviewed by the Committee for data that might be confusing or missing. After discussion, they determine which programs should be funded and at what dollar amount and the Treasurer gives those recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors discusses each recommendation of funding and chooses which programs to fund that fulfill the mission, which is to benefit the indigent, needy, disadvantaged, at-risk residents of York County, VA and Poquoson, VA. The YCVA closely monitors the results provided by each grant recipient at the end of the fiscal year to make certain the targeted mission is fulfilled by the money supplied by the grant.</ExplanationTxt>
