Our mission is to improve the quality of life in this neighborhood on behalf of our supported organizations. Part of our methodologies for bringing about the improvements includes furthering the education of residents and providing clean, safe and affordable housing. As part of the educational aspect Southside awards a number of scholarships to individuals who are attending college. These individuals are residents of our target neighborhood and could be considered members of the charitable classes served by CT Children's Medical Center and Hartford Hospital. Additionally, we work with the City of Hartford public schools and the Hartford Public Library located in our neighborhood. We assist with events at these institutions and also run a Young Authors Contest for students at the Maria C. Sanchez elementary school the winners of this contest actually get to have their books published and recorded in the ISBN system and the books are available at the library to be checked out. The neighborhood residents involved in these programs would be expected to use the services of the hospitals. Regarding the housing aspect Southside seeks out funding to rehabilitate or construct housing in our target neighborhood. These funds are then granted to our subsidiaries who do the actual work. Much of these funds provide the capital necessary for Pope Park Zion, LLC a disregarded entity and wholly owned subsidiary to construct homes for sale to low to moderate income buyers. The homes are located in our target neighborhood. When the homes are sold, for less than cost, to the buyers they have the effect of increasing home ownership rates and the stability of the neighborhood. Additionally, the purchasers and their families should qualify as members of the charitable classes served by the hospitals. In any case all expenditures are related to our mission of support as designed by our supported organizations. The above actions and all other efforts by Southside help in bringing about economic vitality and the improvement of the quality of life in our target neighborhood.
