The sale price of $1,600,000 (less normal transaction costs) exceeded the appraised value and gave AHEAD Energy the flexibility remain a user of the facility (to support research and demonstration projects), and/or to have resources for other projects, or to build a smaller new facility. Form 990, Part III, Line 3 AHEAD Energy participates in the operation of a unique R&D facility in Rochester, NY - which is ideal for demonstrating and promoting energy technologies for remote/off-grid areas. This is a key focus of its mission. The building was refitted by General Motors about 25 years ago, so it has unique but old infrastructure - which proved difficult to maintain. We had the opportunity to sell the site to a commercial real estate investor, after challenges in refinancing the building. It needed and continues to need considerable investment to make upgrades which were beyond AHEAD's resources. We remain involved with the site, in collaboration with Alfred University, but now have the ability to pursue projects or a smaller facility with new or newer infrastructure. The sale was approved by the board and New York Attorney General's office, and the net proceeds were in excess of the appraised value. The majority of the net proceeds is being invested conservatively, while the board considers options for new mission-related programs and projects in collaboration with various academic partners.
