Over the past several years our Aerie has experienced significant turnover in leadership positions which unfortunately led to missed filing deadlines and lapses in our usual recordkeeping and reporting processes. As a volunteer-run nonprofit we rely heavily on the time and commitment of our members and the loss of continuity from officer to officer created unintended gaps in our compliance responsibilities. I was recently elected as Secretary and upon assuming my duties discovered the outstanding return. Since then I have made it a top priority to gather the necessary information and file the late Form 990s as soon as possible. We are fully committed to correcting the situation and ensuring full compliance going forward. Given the unique challenges we have faced and the fact that these delays were not the result of willful neglect or misconduct we are kindly asking the IRS to consider waiving any associated penalties or fines. We are taking this matter very seriously and are actively implementing internal changes to prevent this from happening again in the future including improved recordkeeping practices better officer transition protocols and a shared compliance calendar. We understand the importance of our tax responsibilities and deeply regret the delay. We hope that the steps we are taking to come into full compliance demonstrate our good faith efforts and commitment to transparency. As a volunteer-run nonprofit we did not have the infrastructure in place to easily withstand these transitions. However upon recognizing these issues the Grand Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles appointed a receiver to temporarily oversee the operations of Aerie #2338 and ensure that all necessary steps are being taken to return us to full compliance. Under the receivers supervision and with my recent appointment as Secretary we have begun correcting any compliance issues.
