The committee then reviews all applications, determines which ones have met all requirements, and then ranks them by merit (academic, community volunteering, quality of required essay) and based on the best match for each scholarship available. Once a student has been selected for each available scholarship by the committee, notice is given to the Board of Directors regarding the selections. Awardees are then notified of their selection and checks are then mailed to the individuals. A brief scholarship awards ceremony is held each summer for the selected students and a press release is distributed with information about the scholarship winners (e.g., graduating high school, anticipated university and program of interest). Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7a The Board of Directors are elected annually by the members at the October Bi-annual meeting. There are no qualifications for members, other than that they pay dues each year, with dues set by the Board of Directors. At any meeting of members a quorum for the transaction of business shall consist of a minimum of ten percent (10%) of the membership in good standing at the time of the meeting. Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7b The Board of Directors, subject to any action at any time taken by the members of the corporation, shall have the entire charge, control and management of the corporation and its property and may exercise all or any of its powers. However, major decisions that affect significant assets of the organization are discussed and voted on by the members. The preparer (Sara Quintal) worked with the Treasurer to confirm income and expense transaction details and balances for the filing. Form 990, Part IX, Line 11g Program Services - Other services include $9,977 for scholarship fundraiser expenses, maintaining 3 whaleboats and a boat trailer, leasing dock space, and rowing tournament expenses. Management & General Services - $4,358 for a specialized carpenter to conduct boat repairs, property tax on the newly purchased building, and miscellaneous office expenses. Other Fundraising Expenses - $10,988 for purchasing gear to be sold, food/hall rental/other direct costs of fundraising events. Form 990, Part XI, Line 9 Adjustment for depreciation. The adjustment is significant because it is the first year that we have estimated depreciation for our marine assets (boats and associated equipment). This is the first year we have owned a building, which prompted our need to begin tracking depreciation.
