<Desc>SUMMER AND WINTER PROGRAMS: SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1962, ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS HAS PROVIDED A UNIQUE PHYSICAL AND SCIENTIFIC ENVIRONMENT IDEALLY SUITED FOR STIMULATING INTERACTIONS, COLLABORATIONS, AND INNOVATION IN PHYSICS RESEARCH. FOR 16 WEEKS EACH SUMMER, MORE THAN 500 LEADING INTERNATIONAL RESEARCHERS, FREED FROM THE USUAL CONSTRAINTS AND DISTRACTIONS OF THEIR HOME INSTITUTIONS, COME TO ASPEN TO ENGAGE IN RESEARCH AT THE FOREFRONT OF THEIR FIELDS. RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED: (A) IN THE CONTEXT OF WORKSHOPS IN AREAS AT THE FOREFRONT OF PHYSICS RESEARCH; (B) IN SMALL GROUPS FOCUSED ON SPECIFIC PROJECTS; OR, (C) BY INDIVIDUAL INVESTIGATORS CARRYING OUT THEIR OWN RESEARCH. THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS EMPHASIZE OPEN PROBLEMS AT THE CUTTING EDGE AND ARE DESIGNED TO MAXIMIZE INFORMAL INTERACTIONS WITHIN EACH AREA AND CROSS-FERTILIZATION BETWEEN DIFFERENT AREAS. WHILE CONTINUING TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP IN THE CENTRAL AREAS OF PHYSICS (PARTICLE PHYSICS, ASTROPHYSICS, AND CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS), ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS HAS BEEN OPEN TO NEW DIRECTIONS IN PHYSICS AS WELL AS TO SCIENCE AT THE INTERFACE BETWEEN PHYSICS AND OTHER DISCIPLINES (BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, ENGINEERING, MATERIAL SCIENCE, AND MATHEMATICS). IN ADDITION, 8 ONE- WEEK WINTER CONFERENCES BRING TOGETHER UP TO 110 RESEARCHERS PER WEEK IN AREAS OF CURRENT INTEREST IN PHYSICS AND INTER-DISCIPLINARY PHYSICS RESEARCH. THE CENTER PROVIDES OFFICE SPACE, OFFICE SUPPLIES, MEETING SPACE, LIBRARY FACILITIES, AND NETWORK ACCESS TO ITS PARTICIPANTS. SUPPORT IS PROVIDED TO ALL INDIVIDUALS DURING THE SUMMER SESSION FOR WHOM LODGING IS ARRANGED BY THE CENTER. PHYSICISTS' SUMMER BILLS ARE REDUCED BY THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT; OVERPAYMENTS ARE REFUNDED BY CHECK. WINTER SUPPORT IS USUALLY AWARDED TO JUNIOR SCIENTISTS AND THOSE WITH A DEMONSTRATED NEED IN ORDER TO ATTEND. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED MARCH 31, 2024, THERE WERE 563 SUMMER PARTICIPANTS (SUMMER 2023) AND 624 WINTER PARTICIPANTS (BETWEEN JANUARY AND MARCH 2024).</Desc>

<Desc>OUTREACH PROGRAM: ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS OUTREACH PROGRAM INCLUDES MANY OPTIONS AND AVENUES FOR THE PUBLIC TO BECOME INFORMED ABOUT CUTTING-EDGE PHYSICS RESEARCH, AND TO ENGAGE CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHER EDUCATION IN THE SCIENCES. (1) PUBLIC LECTURES. A CORE OUTREACH ACTIVITY FOR THE CENTER. RENOWNED PHYSICISTS DELIVER WINTER AND SUMMER LECTURES IN ASPEN VENUES DELINEATING THEIR CURRENT RESEARCH OR CURRENT SCIENTIFIC TOPICS OF GENERAL INTEREST. SUMMER ATTENDANCE AT 11 LECTURES WAS 910 PEOPLE. WINTER ATTENDANCE AT 8 LECTURES WAS 668. (2) HIGH SCHOOL MENTOR PROGRAM. ACP HIRES RISING SENIOR PHYSICS STUDENTS FROM 3-5 VALLEY HIGH SCHOOLS TO WORK FOR A SUMMER WEEK AT THE CENTER TO SEE WHAT THEORETICAL PHYSICISTS DO AND TO CHAT WITH 2 OR 3 PHYSICISTS ABOUT COLLEGE, CAREERS, AND/OR SCIENCE. ABOUT 19 PHYSICISTS AND STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN 2023. (3) HIGH SCHOOL MONTHLY RADIO SHOW--RADIO PHYSICS. VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS STUDENTS FROM 3-5 SCHOOLS INTERVIEW PHYSICISTS ON A MONTHLY RADIO SHOW. THIS INTRODUCES THE STUDENTS TO SCIENCE, PUBLIC SPEAKING, AND INFORMS THE LISTENING PUBLIC ABOUT CURRENT PHYSICS TOPICS. THERE WERE 13 STUDENT AND PHYSICIST PARTICIPANTS FOR THIS FISCAL YEAR. (4) ALL PUBLIC LECTURES ARE RECORDED AND ALL VIDEOS ARE AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON THE ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND WITH LINKS FROM THE ACP WEBSITE. THERE ARE OVER 350 ACP SCIENTIFIC LECTURES AND INTERVIEWS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT NO CHARGE.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>ALL PARTICIPANTS IN ACP HOUSING WERE FUNDED BY ONE OF THREE DIFFERENT SOURCES, INCLUDING THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF), THE SIMONS FOUNDATION AND THE SLOAN FOUNDATION. THE SIMONS FOUNDATION HAS GENEROUSLY PROVIDED FUNDS TO SUPPORT PHYSICISTS COMING FROM COUNTRIES WHERE SCIENCE FUNDING IS NOT STRONG OR FROM ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED COUNTRIES IN ADDITION TO POSTDOCS AND UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS. THE SIMONS GRANT PAYS FOR AN ACCEPTED INDIVIDUAL'S REGISTRATION FEE, SHARED HOUSING WHILE IN ASPEN (ONE'S OWN ROOM IN A TWO, THREE, OR FOUR-BEDROOM APARTMENT), AND A PORTION OF AIR TRAVEL, WHICH WILL VARY FROM YEAR TO YEAR, BUT MAY NOT COVER ALL OF ONE'S TRAVEL EXPENSES. SUPPORT FROM THE ALFRED P. SLOAN FOUNDATION AIMS TO REDUCE BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION IN THE SUMMER PROGRAMS OF THE ASPEN CENTER FOR EARLY-CAREER SCIENTISTS BELONGING TO DOMESTIC UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN PHYSICS DEPARTMENTS ACROSS U.S. INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING (BUT NOT LIMITED TO) GENDER, ETHNICITY, AND RACE. THE SLOAN GRANT PAYS FOR AN ACCEPTED INDIVIDUAL'S REGISTRATION FEE, SHARED HOUSING WHILE IN ASPEN (ONE'S OWN ROOM IN A TWO, THREE, OR FOUR-BEDROOM APARTMENT), AND A PORTION OF AIR TRAVEL, WHICH WILL VARY FROM YEAR TO YEAR, BUT MAY NOT COVER ALL OF ONE'S TRAVEL EXPENSES. THOSE SUPPORTED BY NSF RECEIVED 400 PER WEEK AND THOSE SUPPORTED BY THE SIMONS AND SLOAN FOUNDATIONS RECEIVED 875 PER WEEK FOR HOUSING, PLUS REGISTRATION AND TRAVEL SUPPORT. PHYSICISTS' SUMMER BILLS ARE REDUCED BY THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT; ACCOUNT OVERPAYMENTS ARE REFUNDED BY CHECK. WINTER SUPPORT IS NORMALLY AWARDED TO JUNIOR SCIENTISTS AND THOSE SCIENTISTS WITH A DEMONSTRATED NEED IN ORDER TO ATTEND. THIS SUPPORT IS USED TO REDUCE THE PHYSICIST'S WINTER BILL OR IS REFUNDED BY CHECK. ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS AWARDS TRAVEL SUPPORT TO QUALIFIED PHYSICISTS FROM COUNTRIES WITH LIMITED SCIENTIFIC FUNDING, PREFERABLY FROM THE DEVELOPING WORLD. FUNDING IS PROVIDED BY A SIMONS FOUNDATION GRANT FOR THESE UNDERFUNDED INDIVIDUALS. PHYSICISTS MUST PROVIDE RECEIPTS FOR TRAVEL, AND AN EXPLANATION OF THEIR FULL TRIP PLANS. ONCE THESE DOCUMENTS HAVE BEEN REVIEWED IN THE ASPEN, COLORADO OFFICE, CHECKS ARE ISSUED IN THE U.S. TO THE INDIVIDUAL OR TO THE INDIVIDUAL'S INSTITUTION TO REIMBURSE THE PHYSICIST FOR ACP'S PORTION OF TRAVEL. MOST ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS IS APPLIED TOWARD THE PHYSICIST'S OUTSTANDING BILL AT THE CENTER. MOST PARTICIPANTS PAY AN ADDITIONAL BALANCE DUE TO THE CENTER SINCE ASSISTANCE AMOUNTS LISTED HERE DO NOT REACH THE MINIMUM COST FOR ATTENDING A CENTER PROGRAM. OCCASIONALLY THE AWARDEE WILL RECEIVE A CASH REIMBURSEMENT, IN THE FORM OF A CHECK DRAWN ON THE CENTER'S BANK, AFTER THE AWARDEE PROVIDES RECEIPTS AND DOCUMENTATION PROVING THAT THE REIMBURSEMENT IS FOR HOUSING OR TRAVEL EXPENSES REQUIRED FOR WINTER OR SUMMER ATTENDANCE AT ASPEN CENTER FOR PHYSICS.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>HOUSING AND REGISTRATION ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED TO INDIVIDUALS WHO PARTICIPATED IN CENTER PROGRAMMING. SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE PAID DIRECT REIMBURSEMENTS BY THE CENTER FOR COSTS INCURRED (UP TO A STANDARD, MAXIMUM AMOUNT), AND SOME INDIVIDUALS BENEFIT FROM INDIRECT SUPPORT BY HAVING HOUSING AND/OR REGISTRATION COSTS PAID FOR ON THEIR BEHALF BY GRANT AND/OR CONTRIBUTION FUNDING RECEIVED BY THE CENTER. ALL MEMBERS, TRUSTEES, AND OFFICERS WHO RECEIVE ANY DIRECT REIMBURSEMENTS FROM THE CENTER, OR WHO INDIRECTLY BENEFIT BY HAVING COSTS PAID FOR ON THEIR BEHALF, ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SCHEDULE. THE AMOUNTS INCLUDED IN SCHEDULE L MAY NOT RECONCILE TO EXPENSES IN PT. IX, LINE 2 BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1) REGISTRATION FEES ARE PAID TO THE CENTER BY ALL PARTICIPANTS TO COVER COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PROGRAMMING, WHICH TAKES PLACE AT THE CENTER. BECAUSE THIS EXPENSE IS NOT PAID TO A THIRD PARTY, IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SCHEDULE OF FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES. THE REGISTRATION EXPENSE IS INTENDED TO COVER THE COSTS OF THE CENTER, INCLUDING EXPENSES SUCH AS UTILITIES, MAINTENANCE/REPAIRS, SUPPLIES, STAFFING, ETC. 2) HOUSING UNITS ARE RESERVED BY THE CENTER FOR LONG-TERM PERIODS IN ORDER TO ENSURE HOUSING IS AVAILABLE FOR PHYSICISTS. THE COSTS OF THE HOUSING ARE PAID FOR BY THE CENTER TO VARIOUS LANDLORDS OR MANAGEMENT COMPANIES. PERSONS WHO RECEIVE HOUSING ASSISTANCE HAVE HOUSING FEES WAIVED OR REDUCED. THE COSTS OF HOUSING PROVIDED TO THE PHYSICISTS IS INCLUDED IN "HOUSING RENTS" IN PT. IX, LINE 24A.</ExplanationTxt>

DURING THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED MARCH 31, 2024, THERE WERE 563 SUMMER PARTICIPANTS (SUMMER 2023) AND 624 WINTER PARTICIPANTS (BETWEEN JANUARY AND MARCH 2024).</ExplanationTxt>
