Using the IRS website for approved efile software, we made a purchase with a company we do business with. Unbeknownst to us, this software insisted on the use of a pre-existing e-file number. I contacted the IRS efile help line and was told that I most likely purchased the wrong software and instead needed a "Business Owner Package" since we were doing the return ourselves and not via an accountant. I contacted the company I made the purchase with and asked if they had this option and they said they did not and that I needed an e-file number, that I couldn't file without this e-file number. Given this conflicting information, I tried to clarify with the IRS. I called, but my call was not answered. I then went back to the IRS webpage of approved efile options to try to find the correct software. The webpage does not clarify which options are meant to be used by an accounting firm and which are meant for business owner input. I tried calling the IRS again for more information, but received the message "lines are busy; try back later". I did that several times, but always got the same message. Eventually I did identify a website/software that could handle our 990 and efile it. But by the time all this was settled and although we worked diligently to submit on time, we could not complete the work within the deadline date. Our lateness is unintentional and in part due to conflicting information and our inability to reach someone at the IRS to help us identify the correct software.
