The organization announces this policy at the annual business meeting; it is also stated on our website. During the completion of our 2023 f990, it was discovered that our 2022 f990 had not been satisfactorily filed. It was believed the 2022 f990 was filed through an online vendor in November 2023. An administrative error lead to this failure. 2022 was the first year this organization's gross income exceeded $200k requiring a change in how we needed to execute the filing (internal accounting changes, filing a more complicated form, relying on volunteers, etc.); this change, along with the recent requirement to file electronically, disrupted our procedures and contributed to this error. Having not received any notices from the IRS that the filing was not received or that we owed penalties, furthered our belief that the filing was made satisfactorily. If we had received a notice, we would have been able to immediately rectify the matter. Being a small nonprofit with mostly volunteers, a heavy penalty would be devastating to our organization.
