It is also exempt from North Carolina income and franchise taxes under the North Carolina Non-Profit Corporation Act. The Association is annually required to file a Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax (Form 990) with the IRS. In addition, the entity is subject to income tax on net income that is derived from business activities that are unrelated to their exempt purposes. As a result, the Association is subject to unrelated business income tax and is required to file an Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return (Form 990-T) with the IRS. The Association's primary activity subject to taxation includes newsletter advertising. For the year ended December 31, 2023, the Association owed $4,576 in income tax expenses.
