<PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>MMIWUSA's mission is to combat the widespread issue of violence against native people which leads to our people going missing and getting murdered. Through our mission, MMIWUSA aims to serve indigenous families in the United States who are affected by violence and poverty. We also aim to protect those who are vulnerable to it in our communities through preventative measures. We serve those who are affected by the loss of a family member to the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women and people (MMIW/P), and those who are at a broader disadvantage due to things like domestic violence, addiction, trafficking, the foster care system, and other issues that are prevalent in indigenous communities. We serve those who are experiencing the oppressive cycles of abuse and trauma caused by the history of colonial violence. We serve all native people, no matter whether they are on or off their home reservation lands.</PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Our Direct Aid Program helps families through financial assistance and resources, as well as by providing direct advocates to help families navigate the systems that they must deal with after a relative goes missing or gets murdered. In 2023, we helped 29 different families with direct grants issued to families or purchases made on their behalf, and many more were assisted with hands-on resource searching, organizing and advocacy to law enforcement and other agencies. Many of the families who received grants were assisted in several categories: 6 families received funeral assistance, 7 received aid to help financially after the loss of a loved one, 8 individuals received assistance after being a victim of violence, 8 received assistance with advocacy or legal aid, and 4 received grants for violence prevention. Many labor hours were put into putting together these programs by all of our staff members, including hours of traveling to help these families on the ground, hours spent on the phone or in offices advocating, and in other research capacities. Expenses for direct family aid included grants and purchases made on behalf of families in the amount of $16,948.70, wages and employer wage taxes paid in the amount of $31826.68, $54 in postage to ship supplies to a family in South Dakota, $600 in Government Fees, and $300 in a grant to another organization to advocate on behalf of a family.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Our social media project is used in a number of manners, one of the most important is towards the mission of bringing the missing home. How we utilize it for this mission is to run social media campaigns encouraging our audience to look for the missing in their area, or to reach out to local news outlets about cases in their area. We try as we can to work with journalists to get stories about cases out to the public. We have tangibly seen that getting a case out to our audience has led to people being found safe within hours at times, where they have been missing for days or weeks up to that point. Getting cases out to the media has also helped to get community actors on the ground to start organizing and searching. Having strong social media momentum for cases has been vital in bringing home missing relatives. In addition, we also use this to engage with the public, and get education about the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People out to the public. Our social media posts reached over 170,000 followers in 2023, and many families were assisted with getting their fliers out to the public. Multiple fliers were posted on a daily basis, and many labor hours were put into helping families through this outlet. Expenses include $42,285.90 in wages and employer wage taxes, $3259.08 in technology expenses, $600 in advertising, $34.76 in office supplies, and $85 for an event to help educate our employees about social media use.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Our search and rescue program exists to help provide resources and boots on the ground towards bringing the missing home or rescuing our people out of human trafficking, both of which MMIWUSA was able to do successfully on a number of occasions in 2023. We helped fund a large search in rural Alaska that ended up bringing the case all the way to the attention of state of Alaska officials. We had employees participating in search and rescue operations on the ground in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. We also helped fund a large, multi-organization community outreach and search operation in Rapid City which brought resources to the streets to help bring missing loved ones home. 31 direct grants were given to families, and we were able to actually find and bring home safe 16 people, and bring awareness about the disappearances of many more, which also worked in tandem with our Social Media Program Service. Expenses included grants to and purchases made on behalf of families in the amount of $10,581.58, and wages to searchers and search organizers as well as employer wage taxes in the amount of $24,355.80.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Our data project exists to collect statistic about MMIW/P cases across the United States. Through this, we can figure out how and where to target our prevention efforts, and we can also figure out what types of cases are most common in different regions. Indigenous communities face many common issues across the nation related to the MMIW/P issue, but the differences across regions also leads some areas and communities to face their own unique challenges. Our goal is to identify these through data in order to provide better service nationally. This program service helped greatly for outreach in tandem with our social media project. Expenses included $4000 for software and $27,344.14 in wages and employer wage taxes.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Our Staying Sacred Program exists to help Indigenous youth come together in a group setting to have hard conversations about issues that are affecting Indigenous people as a whole, as well as those issues which contribute most to the MMIW/P issue. In 2022 we began developing a curriculum for Staying Sacred in order to start having meetings in multiple communities, with a program that is repeatable. The goal of Staying Sacred is to help youth to be equipped with tools to protect themselves and those around them through education about violence prevention. We hope to help reduce the MMIW/P issue through prevention using the Staying Sacred program. In 2023, we continued our curriculum development, however we will be putting this program service on hiatus while we reorganize in order to make it a stronger deliverable later on. Expenses include $10,908.23 in wages and wage taxes towards curriculum development, along with $6528.40 in contractor fees.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
