The Honolulu Sertoma Club performs charitable community service projects, including but not limited to, hearing safety and hearing health projects as part of Sertoma International's hearing charity mission. The Honolulu Sertoma Club's primary charitable mission is providing leadership training, mentorship, educational seminars, scholarships and community service opportunities to Hawaii's Gifted and Talented Youth.</PrimaryExemptPurposeTxt>
      <ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp>
        <DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>The Honolulu Sertoma Club (the Sertoma name is a composite of SERvice TO Mankind) was established to continue the Serteen (SERvice TEEN) program and support the hearing health mission of SERTOMA, INC., the national sponsoring charity from whom we get our Group Exemption with the IRS. The core members of Honolulu Sertoma are Serteens alumni and people associated with the Serteen program. The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii consists of gifted and talented students from public and private middle and high schools on Oahu who test in the top 2% on a nationally recognized achievement test. The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii provides social interaction and leadership training for gifted and talented students who wish to serve the community. The Honolulu Sertoma Club does business as the Serteens Club of Hawaii to mentor Hawaii's gifted and talented youth providing leadership training, peer association and community service opportunities. The Honolulu Sertoma Club offers life-long community service opportunities to its student and adult members. Every year, the Serteens youth group develops and executes several community service projects, in addition to the Honolulu Sertoma Club's community service mission of providing leadership development training and mentorship to its gifted and talented youth members. In the past academic year, the Serteens held monthly leadership development meetings and numerous charitable service projects to benefit the community. In addition to community service projects, the Honolulu Sertoma Club hosts two educational enrichment camps. The first is in July, which is our Leadership Camp, and the second is in February, which is our Knights Motivational Camp (KMC). Leadership Camp is for the members of the George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii. The camp focuses on supporting the Serteen mission of social interaction by providing positive peer association; and providing opportunities for youths in grades 7-12 to expand their leadership skills and knowledge. Leadership Camp focused on supporting the Serteen mission of leadership training by holding several educational seminars on problem solving and developing action plans for projects to help the youth members set goals and the develop the means to achieve them. Serteens also developed their communications skills by publishing a monthly club newsletter called the "Serp." Serteen officers are required to communicate effectively through the Serp, information about upcoming camps and events. The Serteen officers and committee members are required to effectively use via phone, internet, SMS and other digital communication channels to share information and gather information. The Serteen officers and committee members are coached on effectively using emails to communicate information and gather information. Serteen officers and committee members are coached on effectively using the club's website to communicate with club membership. Analytical skills Decision-making - Serteen officers are mentored to assess situations and make the appropriate decisions. Strategic thinking skills Annual planning - Officers are mentored to plan out activities for the academic year at the beginning of their elected terms and multiple educational retreats are held to assess progress and develop additional project plans for events and activities. The Serteens are mentored on methods to convert their ideas into plans and to identify resources required to turn ideas into actions and to execute projects that benefit our community. Financial requirements to fund club operations and projects are identified and a budget for the club is mapped out each year. The club organizes fundraisers for all operations and activities. Camp planning - Initial planning for the Knights Motivational Camp (KMC) occurs in the first two officer meetings. It goes into high gear in July after the Leadership Camp. For Camp planning, the officers and committee members are all involved in planning multiple projects and activities in support of the club mission of leadership development, positive peer association and community service. Activity Worksheets are planning tools the Serteens utilize to plan their activities. The Honolulu Sertoma members who serve as club Advisors help teach the Serteens problem solving skills and cope with problems that are foreseeable and those that are not. These youth are mentored to discover their innate strengths and skills are developed and honed through experience to help them reach their potential as well-rounded citizens in our community. Service learning through planning and holding various community service projects over the year further reinforces their leadership development. The Honolulu Sertoma Club Advisors to the Serteens Club emphasize the concept of a "Plan Book". The plan book is an effort to get Serteens to write down their goals. This serves to help the Serteen refine their goals and allows the Sertomans and others to tailor their leadership coaching to individual members. The plan book focuses on seven dimensions: Physical, Social, Spiritual, Financial, Educational/Professional, Personal, and Community. The Plan Book helps Serteens learn to self-actualize and then to reach out to others to contribute to the community. Many Serteen Alumni continue to contribute to their communities in various ways. We want the Serteens to develop a Plan Book and use it as their roadmap to success. Seminars at KMC use the theme chosen by the Serteen VP of Leadership Development and focus on the 5+1+1 areas we emphasize throughout the year and in the plan books: Physical, Social, Spiritual, Financial, Educational/Professional, Personal and Community. The Honolulu Sertoma Club awarded several scholarships to graduating high school seniors going to college through a generous grant that we received from the Cottington Trust. In February, the Honolulu Sertoma Club took the Serteens youth group to its KMC educational encampment. The Sertomans provided program support, seminars and mentoring for the Serteens. Several seminars were presented by Honolulu Sertoma Club members. Sertomans also made themselves available for individual discussions and mentoring. Seminars included financial decision-making; developing personal mission statements, personal values, and goals; physical goal setting - public speaking; long term goal setting; and dealing with obstacles. The camp normally includes two planned hikes. In April, the Honolulu Sertoma Club sponsored its annual appreciation banquet for the Serteens youth group. This awards banquet highlighted the numerous community service projects and leadership development activities that the Serteens participated in and recognized the outgoing seniors graduating from Honolulu Sertoma's educational enrichment program. Outgoing student leaders were recognized for their contributions and the newly elected student leaders were inducted in their terms of office. Graduating Serteens were also awarded Cottington Trust and Memorial Scholarships. The newly elected Serteen officers attended leadership training seminars and workshops sponsored by Honolulu Sertoma members in May. They developed and planned upcoming community service projects, special event fundraisers and social projects for the following academic year. The Honolulu Sertoma Club produced and printed Safe Ears hearing safety brochures and distributed these brochures with an educational plan to local schools for young people to protect their hearing health. This community service project was in support of Sertoma's hearing health mission. In addition to this, Honolulu Sertoma offers an online hearing health and safety educational program via its website to the general public. All Honolulu Sertoma members provide charitable contributions to support Sertoma's hearing health mission. Each year, several Honolulu Sertoma members attend conventions held by various Sertoma leadership groups to help raise contributions in support of the Sertoma Annual Fund that finances scholarships and grants for college students entering audiology and speech therapy fields of study and for students who have hearing disabilities. Honolulu Sertoma members individually contribute to Sertoma, Inc's national charity mission, and the club also contributed to Sertoma's Annual Fund that goes to supporting scholarships and grants for hearing health services and programs. In 2023, the Honolulu Sertoma Club hosted the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Serteens Club of Hawaii. This event brought over 100 Serteen alumni from all over the world to celebrate 50 years of Serteens in Hawaii and recognize the accomplishments of the Honolulu Sertoma Club in sponsoring the George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>
