<FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt>Current Year Facts and Circumstances: Facts and Circumstances TestThe Torrington Historical Society is an organization of the type that is typically supported by the public. For example, the Torrington Historical Society operates a history museum, a house museum and a research library. Our varied programs include: exhibits, tours, historical research, and publications that serve the public in many ways. We, in turn, receive public support in a variety of ways including memberships, annual giving, donations, bequests, governmental grants and public foundation grants.Ten percent limitation:The organizations level of public support has been above 33 and 1/3 percent for many years. However, during 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 our level of public support fell slightly below that threshold and was 27.91% for 2019, 30.15% for 2020, 31.94% for 2021, 32.58% for 2022, and 32.10% for 2023. These percentages are well above the 10% threshold of public support to meet the Facts and Circumstances Test. Attraction of Public Support:The organization has staff and volunteers who are organized to attract public support. A membership committee works to attract new members and the annual membership drive maintains our annual membership level around 500 individuals. In addition to the annual membership drive, staff members organize an annual, year-end giving campaign. Both of these efforts net significant public support. The organization also has annual fundraising events for the general public and staff members regularly submit grant proposals to governmental agencies and public foundations with a high level of success. Percentage of financial support:The organizations percentage of financial support from the general public is somewhat depressed by the fact that about 20% of annual income comes from the organizations endowment fund. This endowment fund was created with donations and bequests from dozens of unrelated individuals who are classed as the general public. Sources of support:Typically on average the organization received membership support from over 500 individual gigts; donors to the annual appeal; unsolicited donations; corporate gifts; governmental grants and public foundation grants. In addition various individuals contributed objects and archival materials to the museums collections. Availability of public facilities and public participation:1)The organization operates a house museum and adjoining history museum that are open to the public for 9 months of the year. The museums library and archives are open to the public year round for in-person visits or on-line inquiries. 2) The organization provides educational lecture programs for the general public, school programs and opens its archives to anyone conducting historical research. The organization also publishes scholarly books, pamphlets and documentaries that are utilized by the general public. 3) The organization maintains a variety of educational initiatives and employs an education specialist to fulfill its educational mission Additional factors for membership organizations:1)The organizations membership committee and staff led membership initiatives are designed to enroll a large cross-section of the community as members of the organization. 2) Annual membership dues start at $20 for individual seniors and $25 for other individuals. This is an affordable membership rate for our demographics. 3) The institutions educational programs and exhibits cover a variety of historical topics that hold a broad public interest.
