The Board of Directors has a standing committee for legislative advocacy that directs these efforts, and expenses are paid for by the Association. TX legislature only meets every other year, so these expenses only occur every other year. Since the last year was a legislative year, the Association sponsored UNT Day at the Capitol in February 2023, with total expenses for the entire day (including a huge lunch open to anyone at the capitol that day/public) being $39,921.70. Expenses included renting buses to transport alumni, students, and volunteers from Denton to Austin, food for the day including a large lunch that was provided to everyone at the Capitol and the public on the day of the event, as well as costs related to the supplies, potage, printing, and signage. Legislators from both parties were met with, and all expenditures were related to supporting events or activities undertaken by UNT community members and volunteers to advocate and appeal directly to legislators on behalf of the university and are not paid to lobbying firms or consultants. Form 990, Part III, Line 3 Yes - Effective January 2023, the Association terminated our Compgrad program, which provided a free one-year membership to graduates upon graduation from UNT. The cost of fulfillment for this program was $5000-$7000 per long semester ($10,000-$14,000 annually), and the rate of renewals converting these free memberships into dues paying memberships after the free year was less than 1%. It was determined to not be a cost-effective program, with little to no benefit/ROI and was discontinued with the last graduating class to receive the benefit being the December 2022 graduates. Once those free memberships expire in January 2024, the number of members will greatly decrease, and the membership numbers will be reflective of only dues paying members (annual and life). The costs for fulfillment for this program came from the Association budget, while the revenue from for the small number of renewed memberships after the first free year went to the University/Alumni Relations. So, this represents a cost savings for the Association. Additionally, eliminating the free membership, ultimately will lead to a smaller number of members as the Compgrads will no longer be counted in membership numbers, but the remaining membership number (after the last of the Compgrad memberships expire) will be reflective of actual paying members. In Process We have started the process of planning a transition away from all paid memberships. While we are still in the planning and execution stages, and do not expect to make the change until early fiscal year 2025 (likely Sept-December 2024), in anticipation of this change we have ceased actively promoting memberships. We are continuing to do renewals of annual memberships at this time and the membership options are still on our website, brochures, etc and we are not discouraging anyone from joining at this time. Due to no longer actively promoting memberships, there has been a decline in membership revenues that are collected through the University/Alumni Engagement, which has subsequently also led to a slight decline in fulfillment costs, promotion costs and other related marketing/membership costs on the Alumni Association side.
