Students complete the program with a finalized research presentation and a formal research paper that will be submitted for publication. Our professional scientist mentors are experienced in research and in mentoring students with a variety of research interests. They will guide students to utilize a diverse array of research skills that can be used to study almost any topic imaginable. Students emerge from the program with an experience they can add to a college resume, and life skills that will better prepare them for any career. 48794 48904 In our school programs, we served 500 students from Middle and High Schools. We provided an inquiry-based approach to science learning and the scientific method. We focus on Student-Driven Research, where students design and implement their own independent research projects. Within this framework, we can teach a variety of subjects. We start by teaching students to ask scientific questions and then have professional scientists guide them through the process of research to answer their questions. The powerful experience of asking and answering their own questions gives students an unforgettable connection to science and the natural environment. These programs are certified accomplished by STEMworks at WestEd, among the top in the nation's STEM programs. This specific program focused on California snowpack and the environmental implications. 24810 46787 In our summer camps, we had 184 students for one week sessions in Truckee, Donner Summit, and Kirkwood, CA. We provided an inquiry-based approach to exploring the outdoors. Each week has a theme such as plants, insects, or water. We use scientists to help them begin to understand the scientific method. We give kids an unforgettable connection to science and the natural environment. These programs also serve as a good source of income to help us pay staff to develop new program materials. 31633 0 13200 We have outreach and free online programs such as, Lunch with a Scientist. Lunch with a Scientist is the biggest of these programs. It is an online library of talks with companion investigations for the teachers to use with their students. This program is completely free for any teacher and student. Twice a month we record a new talk. When I filled out the form, I thought I had checked that our accounting method is a cash basis Form 990, Header, Line B and I checked accrual basis and didn't realize. No one noticed until a new board member was going through our old 990s Form 990, Header, Line C and asked why we changed accounting methods. Our accounting has always been on a cash basis and we never changed Form 990, Header, Line D accounting methods. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The 990 first goes to our bookkeeper and treasurer. They check it over. Then it gets distributed to all board members. They each have to send in a formal acceptance of the 990 before it is submitted. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 Our employees all make less than comparable jobs for other similar organizations. We are trying hard to raise the salaries to keep our employees. The board reviews all salaries before the start of each year. The treasurer and the ED work on the budget and try to give the best salaries they can while still balancing funds. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 Those are not on our website but available in our company electronic drive for all employees and board members to see. If anyone requests access we will happily email them to them. They are also shared with anyone before they accept a job with the organization. All financial documents are available in our annual report and the appropriate documents are also uploaded to Guidestar. This form was amended.
