<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>King County Eviction Prevntion-HHCDEPRAP23 The Port of Support's Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance program has successfully provided crucial services to over 2,000 clients across King County, Washington. The program's primary mission is to help individuals and families facing eviction by offering immediate financial assistance, support services, and eviction prevention strategies. Our focus on real-time, door-to-door services ensures that clients receive timely intervention at the critical moment when they need it most. By removing barriers to service access and providing personalized care, the program has significantly contributed to housing stability in the region. A key aspect of our service delivery model is the integration of case managers with laptops working directly in the field. This innovative approach enables our team to respond promptly to client needs and provide real-time updates, ensuring that assistance is both swift and effective. By having case managers equipped with portable technology, we eliminate delays in processing applications and providing financial assistance. This capability ensures that clients can be served without the need to visit offices or navigate complex systems, making the process more accessible and user-friendly. In addition to the accessibility provided by field-based case managers, our program offers instant interpretation services, which have been instrumental in overcoming language barriers. Given King County's diverse population, language access is a critical component of ensuring that all clients can fully understand their rights, the assistance available to them, and the steps required to maintain housing. Our instant interpretation services, available in multiple languages, have enabled us to serve clients from various cultural backgrounds, ensuring that no one is left behind due to communication challenges. Through consistent outreach efforts, our program has built strong relationships with local communities and other service organizations. By collaborating with landlords, community groups, and government entities, we have created a network of support that fosters long-term housing stability. Additionally, we have educated tenants and landlords about eviction prevention strategies, mediation services, and resources available for both parties. This proactive approach has helped to mitigate disputes before they escalate into legal actions, preventing many evictions before they occur. Overall, the Port of Support's Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance program has made a significant impact in King County by providing over 2000 clients with the tools and resources needed to avoid eviction and maintain stable housing. By combining real-time services, field-based case management and culturally competent support, we have not only prevented evictions but also empowered individuals and families to achieve long term housing stability. Our ongoing commitment to accessibility innovation, and community collaboration ensures that we remain a trusted resource for those at risk of losing their homes.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Virginia Mason Francian Health Mini Grant Port of Support's 3rd Annual Injury Prevention and Harm Reduction Event, held in Des Moines, Washington, made a significant impact by providing essential services to residents affected by firearm injuries. By partnering with Seattle Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Department and the King County Health Department, Port of Support was able to administer valuable resources and training to the community. The event focused on gun safety, firearm locking mechanisms, and harm reduction strategies for drug overdose prevention. With over 50 participants learning about gun safety, 34 children engaging in fun, educational games, and 15 firearm locking devices distributed, the event successfully addressed critical issues impacting the local community. The interactive, backyard BBQ-style setting of the event fostered a relaxed environment for residents to engage, learn, and build connections, tackling both injury prevention and community-building in a holistic manner. A key feature of the event was the distribution of educational materials and tools. Seattle Children's Hospital provided around 15 firearm locking storage devices, including lock boxes, trigger locks, and cable locks, along with brochures on topics such as firearm safety, suicide prevention, and resources for youth at risk. These materials were essential for informing attendees about keeping firearms secure and reducing risks within the home. Additionally, King County Health Department provided 25 harm reduction kits and trained 10 individuals on overdose prevention techniques. The event successfully reached a wide audience, with 109 participants signing up for Port of Support programming, underscoring the value of offering accessible, on-the-spot support to community members. While the event was a great success, a few challenges arose, particularly around language barriers. Spanish and Swahili-speaking families faced difficulties understanding the services offered by the vendors due to limited language support. One notable challenge was the reliance on children to translate for their parents, which made it difficult to address sensitive topics like drug use and overdose prevention. In response, Port of Support utilized cell phone translation apps to assist with communication. Moving forward, plans include printing educational materials in Swahili and ensuring a more seamless translation process, enhancing the accessibility of these important services for non-English speaking residents. Despite these challenges, the event achieved its participant engagement goals, with a total of 50 individuals learning about gun safety and locks, 25 collecting resources on mental health and addiction, and 35 receiving information on harm reduction strategies for drug overdose. The backyard BBQ-style event format helped break down barriers and create a community atmosphere where attendees felt comfortable learning and asking questions. Through this format, Port of Support not only provided critical harm reduction resources but also built a sense of community and solidarity among residents, an essential step in creating a more supportive and resilient neighborhood. The success of this event highlights the importance of continuing to offer such services in the future. Port of Support is committed to sustaining these efforts through its new partnership with the King County Human Services Department, ensuring that injury prevention and harm reduction funding will continue to support the community's needs. This collaboration will enable the program to expand and offer additional resources, making it a key player in reducing youth violence and promoting safer environments. The event also reinforced Port of Support's critical role in addressing gun violence, mental health, and substance use issues, offering a comprehensive approach to creating positive change in the community.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>Thurston Strong Grant-Resilience Fund- Port of Support (POS) has made substantial strides in addressing the systemic issues affecting marginalized and vulnerable communities, with a focus on dismantling cycles of poverty and promoting self-sufficiency. Our organization operates with a clear vision to create equitable, innovative programs that empower individuals and families, especially those facing the deepest socio-economic challenges. By providing culturally specific and trauma-informed services, POS has fostered an environment that emphasizes resilience, healing, and long-term stability. We engage community members through participatory frameworks, ensuring they have an authentic stake in the services being provided. This approach helps to amplify the voices of those who have been historically underrepresented in decision-making processes, creating lasting, positive change in the lives of our clients. At the heart of POS's mission is the provision of holistic support that tackles the social, cultural, emotional, and economic barriers that our clients face. By utilizing data-driven approaches, applied metrics, and a deep understanding of black psychology, POS develops solutions tailored to the specific needs of marginalized groups. Our case managers, many of whom have lived experiences that mirror those of the clients they serve, build strong, trusting relationships that make our clients feel seen, heard, and empowered. The results of our programs speak for themselves. Through innovative approaches like short, concise surveys and flexible funding, clients are empowered to navigate their housing challenges with dignity and confidence. These streamlined processes have been instrumental in ensuring that families at imminent risk of homelessness receive timely intervention and support. POS's Youth and Young Adult Homeless Program has provided housing solutions, career assessments, continuing education opportunities, and mental health services. Our clients benefit from personalized case management and the option to participate in programs that foster growth and self-empowerment. By working with mentors who have overcome similar social inequities, youth and young adults are able to see firsthand the possibilities for overcoming obstacles. This mentorship not only instills hope but also provides concrete tools for resilience, teaching participants the skills necessary for self-actualization and long-term success. POS's impact extends beyond housing and immediate needs. Through culturally responsive programming and a deep understanding of the unique struggles faced by BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and survivors of domestic violence, we are addressing the root causes of poverty and homelessness. By operating with cultural humility, collaborating with clients to identify and address hidden barriers, and continuously evaluating the effectiveness of our programs, POS is helping to shape a more just and equitable future for the communities we support. As we continue to innovate and expand our services, we remain committed to breaking down the social inequities that have long impacted our clients, creating pathways for lasting change.</DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Port of Support (POS) acknowledges the late filing of its 2022 tax return, and respectfully requests that the IRS consider this filing delay as a result of reasonable cause under Section 6652(c)(1)(A). POS is committed to compliance with all applicable tax regulations and operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving marginalized communities, including those affected by poverty, homelessness, and crime. While the organization strives to meet all regulatory deadlines, the delay in filing the 2022 return was due to a combination of circumstances that were beyond our control and significantly impacted our ability to file on time. 1. Unexpected Staff Shortages and Administrative Challenges: In the period leading up to the deadline, POS experienced an unexpected and temporary shortage of key administrative staff due to health issues and other personal emergencies within the team. The loss of critical staff responsible for preparing the tax return, compounded by a temporary reliance on new or less experienced personnel, resulted in significant delays in the preparation of the necessary documentation and filing of the return. Although POS made every effort to maintain adequate staffing levels and keep operations running smoothly, these unforeseen challenges impacted the timely filing of our tax return. 2. Unforeseen Technical Difficulties: In addition to staffing challenges, POS encountered significant technical difficulties with the software systems used to prepare and file the tax return. The organization's accounting software experienced malfunctions and required more time than expected to resolve, delaying the finalization of our financial records. This issue was further exacerbated by delays in receiving necessary financial statements and documentation from third-party partners and service providers. Despite our best efforts to address these issues promptly, the technical delays prevented POS from filing the return by the original due date. 3. Competing Priorities and Increased Demand for Services: Throughout 2022, POS experienced an unprecedented increase in demand for its services, which include providing critical resources for individuals experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, and other crises. The heightened need for immediate services during the year, particularly in response to economic hardships exacerbated by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, diverted significant resources and attention away from administrative tasks, including tax preparation. In response to the increased demand, POS prioritized service delivery to vulnerable community members, which inadvertently contributed to the delay in filing the tax return. 4. Commitment to Correcting the Issue: As soon as the late filing was recognized, POS took immediate steps to rectify the situation. Our organization has since implemented a set of internal controls to ensure that similar delays do not occur in the future. This includes securing additional staffing resources for tax filing and developing contingency plans to address potential technical issues. POS remains committed to complying with all tax obligations and ensuring that future filings are made on time. Conclusion: Port of Support respectfully requests that the IRS consider the late filing of our 2022 tax return as the result of reasonable cause, due to unexpected staff shortages, technical difficulties, and competing priorities related to our mission-driven services. We are dedicated to fulfilling our obligations and have taken appropriate steps to prevent future delays. We appreciate the IRS's consideration of this request and ask for leniency regarding any penalties associated with the late filing.</ExplanationTxt>
