From 1985 to 2015, the Center operated as St. Francis Childcare and was located within St. Francis of Bellingham, a skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center. In order to expand our program, we moved to partner with the Mt. Baker Care Center and Summit Place Assisted Living in 2015. The primary purpose of our center has always been to provide a unique early childhood education program within a residential care facility, which will benefit the residents, children, families, and staff members through mutual interactions and continuing relationships. Quality early childhood care and education programs allow parents to engage in work and other activities with the assurance that their children are in a safe environment that promotes health, happiness, and well-being. We currently serve 60 children 1 - 6 years of age each day, 85 children annually. We are undergoing a program expansion to open an infant room. Our Whatcom County community is experiencing a childcare crisis in which 55% of families lack childcare, including the overwhelming need for infant care. We see this as a call to action to raise our capacity and expand our care. Our new infant room will allow us to expand care to 68 children 0 - 6 years of age each day, 100 children annually. We are committed to actively benefitting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and underserved low-income populations in our community through priorities given in our enrollment process and through our Tuition Assistance Program. To respond to the underservice of BIPOC folks in our Whatcom County community, we have a prioritization included in our childcare enrollment waitlist that places those who have indicated a form of racial, ethnic, or language diversity at the top of the list. A similar priority is given to families with children in foster or kinship care, and those who receive subsidies. By giving these priorities, we are valuing the diversity that BIPOC, low income, and other underserved families bring to our community. We also operate an in-house Tuition Assistance Program that current and prospective Generations families can apply for. We created this program to meet the needs of families who typically fall through the cracks financially. Before creating this program, we saw through our work with the USDA that we were serving very low income (free meal category) and above-income families, with little or no families in the reduced-price meal category.
