In addition to the basic educational requirements, Machias Valley Christian School teaches children from their first classroom experience to be aware of the world around them, to be responsible citizens in the community and demonstrate caring for others. Children learn early on how to assess the weather, tell time, use calendars and write in cursive. Students are encouraged to work cooperatively in groups and also independently. The school emphasizes reading comprehension and enhances science learning with experimentation. Art and music are taught, and the students perform a chorale every December; their Art is displayed each spring for the annual Spaghetti Dinner. Students raise their own money and select one or more missionaries to support with their donations. They raise money for the privilege of doing a pie toss at favorite teachers each spring. In FY23, the school took the students to the state capitol, Augusta, to observe lawmakers at the statehouse. Students visited a local bank for career day. The school offered students, if parents desired, a free flu shot at the school. The school uses Iowa Testing to assess select classroom grades annually.
