The mission of the organization is to provide supplemental education to students and to reward them with scholarship monies and awards when they excel. For this purpose, North Carolina is divided into 13 geographical areas with a volunteer chairperson who organizes an annual Festival where students perform for adjudicators (judges). The students receive numerically graded comment sheets and earn points which may accumulate over the years. At intervals of 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90, trophies in the form of loving cups in graduated sizes are presented to the students. The outstanding students in each Festival qualify to enter the State Scholarship Competition where monies are awarded in 13 categories of piano, 2 in music education, 6 in voice, 7 in strings plus 4 categories of music composition as well as 4 categories of hymn playing.. In addition to the previous awards, a music Royalty Competition is sponsored statewide each year for the King and Queen of Music along with their court: Prince and Princess; Lord and Lady; Page Boy and Page Girl. These audition have age requirements which allow students from kindergarten through high school to compete for monetary awards. NCFMC membership fees include preset amounts which are sent to the National Federation of Music Clubs to support scholarship awards at the national level for collegiate students and young professionals who are embarking on concert careers. The greatest portions of NCFMC funds support scholarships and awards. The 2nd largest expense for NCFMC is for adjudicators (judges) for the Festivals and state competitions. The 3rd greatest expense is for supplies, equipment rental, printing, etc. There are 16 Senior Clubs (Senior = teachers and not age related) throughout North Carolina who meet periodically and plan local programs and concerts for members. The public is often invited. The greatest source of pride is the fact that for 107 years this organization has excelled with NO Paid Employees. The volunteer work is a labor of love!
