Genevieve, Missouri in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Our programs introduce audiences of diverse backgrounds and age levels to the distinctive French vertical timber architecture, imperial Spanish rule from the 1760s to 1800, daily life in the colonial era, and the development of a unique Creole culture in this region, which grew from the interaction of the colonists of French descent with Native Americans, Africans, and other groups. In 2022, our museum campus, The Centre for French Colonial Life, served a total of 17,815 visitors, indicating a gradual recovery from the impact of the Covid pandemic, which had reduced visitation to 7,773 in 2020, and 14,888 in 2021. Historic preservation is a key part of our mission as well as education: in addition to a modern exhibits facility, our museum campus includes four historic buildings dating from the late 18th to mid-nineteenth centuries. French Colonial America has some of the artifacts on loan to the National Park Service at the Ste Genevieve Visitor Center. The exhibit on loan explains "Why we are French" also helps orient visitors to the history of the French settlements in the early 1700's. Exhibits on display in the museum tell the history of the Battle of St. Louis on May 26, 1780 and "Augmenting the Evidence", based on archeological findings on the sites owned by the organization. The educational programming in the Beauvais/Linden teaches about the history of these people and times with interactive hands on programs. Tours of the furnished (Bolduc and LeMeilleur) allow visitors to better understand the French, Caribbean, Native Peoples and African influences.
