FORM 990 - SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION 2023 has been extraordinarily productive for SHARK on a number of fronts including our two primary issues: rodeos and cockfighting. We continue to be focused and tenacious, never giving up on our goals. When you combine dedication with innovation, it s a win for animals. No one is more productive with your donations than SHARK. Cockfighting: In 2023, we crisscrossed the country over and over, from Delaware to Alabama. Mississipi, Tennessee, Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas, Illinois, and more. We flew drones from one cockfight pit to another, exposed corrupt police departments and expanded our cockfighting campaign to include gamefowl breeders and USPS offices shipping these birds off to their doom. Victories: In January, an illegal cockfight pit was busted in Union County, TN and 98 people were cited. In March, a would be cockfight pit owner, was sentenced to 15 months for attempting to bribe a police officer. In April, a SHARK pilot flew a drone right down to eye level to document the existence of a cockfight pit being stubbornly ignored by corrupt Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson and Tim Sizemore, an infamous Kentucky cockfighter, who was sentenced to federal prison. In May, we uncovered and exposed an active cockfight in Delaware. In July, a civil jury found cockfighters James Bub Newcomb II and Shannon Clark guilty of assault and battery along with intentional infliction of emotional distress against Steve Hindi and SHARK investigator Adam Fanestock. Also in July, SHARK beat New York State and Wayne County, New York. They both settled with SHARK for unlawful arrests. In November, US District Judge sentenced a Laurel County Kentucky deputy sheriff in federal court to jail and home detention. Rodeos: In 2023, we drove the number of Boone County rodeos down to just a handful and expanded our campaign to four more counties - Will County, McHenry County, Ogle County, and Lasalle County. Some counties, such as Will County, have taken strong action to do the right thing, and issued Temporary Restraining Orders as well as making arrests. McHenry County is taking a hard look at how to best deal with the abuse, and we have confidence that they will do the right thing also. In another significant step towards bringing an end to steer-tailing events, on August 24th SHARK and the Humane Farming Association have taken legal action by filing a lawsuit against Boone County. On November 2nd, SHARK and California based Animal Protection and Rescue League filed a lawsuit against the San Diego Padres baseball team and C5 Rodeo Company, who had planned an event in January. The lawsuit, which was filed in San Diego Superior Court, alleges that a 3 day event at San Diego s Petco Park will result in the abuse of animals, and claims that the C5 rodeo company uses electric prods and other cruel devices on animals.
