Working with our partners from the BasicNeeds Network, we develop and promote strategies to enable people to live and work in healthy communities. We provide seed funding and training strategies for community health workers to promote self-help groups, peer support and other community partnerships. Our work is in partnership with BasicNeeds programs and other collaborators in low resource settings in Africa and South Asia. In 2023, BNUS provided the second year of funding from the ECOM Foundation to strengthen community mental health for small holder farmers with BasicNeeds Basic Rights Kenya. BNBRK provided farming families with: 1) entrepreneurship and Village Savings and Loan training for self-help groups; 2) outreach for mental health services through county clinics serving over 600 people in the coffee societies; 3) disability inclusion sessions in three coffee societies; and 4) distributing urgent aid to the neediest families in the area. 24910 X 0 BasicNeeds US (BNUS) continued support for BasicNeeds Ghana to sustain work on School Based Mental Health Clubs in the Tamale region. Their work included: support for over 300 students in 10 different mental health clubs; mental health awareness training for students and teachers; coaching club members as peer educators and teachers as chaperons. Our bridge funding from September 2021 also sustained organizational capacity in BN Ghana to develop clubs and self-help approaches for youth. 0 0 BN US made a grant to CBM UK to build the capacity of the BasicNeeds Network and ensure its sustainability. This included support for three areas: 1) funds to develop and maintain an interactive website and a secure online community space for engagement, knowledge exchange, and networking opportunities 2) Member-driven training tailored to the specific needs and preferences of network members; 3) Needs assessment on impact data for the network including gaps, challenges, and opportunities for data from all network members. The work is underway. 10000 X 0 BasicNeeds Network members saw the success of VSLAs in our November 2022 visit to Kilifi County, Kenya. We found impressive results in the literature on the sustainability of VSLAs, but few if any examples of VSLAs for families with mental illnesses or disabilities. BNUS provided funding to cover direct expenses for BN Ghana staff to visit the Ashanti Region, meet the ECOM Foundation staff, scope out the work and refine the proposal.
