In January, 2023, the organization (doing business as the Carter Conservation Fund) awarded 14 grants through our Carter Conservation Fund in a competitive process, totaling almost $21,000. The grants were spread widely around our New Mexico and Western Texas service area and represented an impressive diversity of projects. In addition, we gave $3000 ($600 each) to 5 regional herbaria, gave a $500 Teacher of the Year Award, and in the summer, gave a $500 Conservation Champion Award. During the spring we redesigned our process for board consideration and decision-making regarding the Carter Conservation Fund grants. We replaced our Conservation Committee chair and revitalized the Conservation Committee, seeking participation from all 7 chapters. The Conservation Chair has offered input for a variety of US agency comment periods. The Chair has also written letters of support for grants to other non-profit organizations and position letters in general. Our El Paso, TX chapter held our annual conference in Alpine, TX, September 22-24, 2023 which drew participants from across New Mexico and Western Texas. Knowledgeable presenters, a student poster session, field trips and social events all helped to spread our mission. Four NPSNM chapters (Gila, Taos, Otero and El Paso) run annual native plant sales that offer quality native plants, some of which are hard to find in the commercial market. These native plant sales are open to the public, which also helps to spread the mission of NPSNM. In Fall 2023, we applied for, and received a unique entity identifier from the System for Awards Management. This greatly helped the Gila Chapter in applying for and receiving a grant from the Trails Plus program of the State of New Mexico. Throughout the year, our seven chapters have held many quality programs and field trips open to our members and the general public, as well. The Otero chapter held a 1/2 day workshop for dozens of participants interested in the history, culture and propagation of figs.
