NAASR advances Armenian Studies through research and scholarship, offers high-quality educational public programming, and supports and connects scholars of Armenian Studies worldwide with each other and a broad general public to build a global community, expand horizons, and preserve and enrich Armenian culture, history, and identity for future generations. 0 0 700332 118889 Since 1955, NAASR has built an extensive library and maintains one of the top rare book Armenian libraries open to the public, with over 30,000 books and holdings dating to the 1600s, and periodicals dating to the 1800s. Materials in the collection are primarily written in Armenian and English, but important publications in Turkish, Farsi, Russian, French, German, Arabic, and other languages are also represented. Through the years, numerous significant and valuable collections have been donated to NAASR including special collections-personal archives and papers from over 25 prominent scholars, genocide survivors, religious figures, and early immigrants to the U.S.NAASR's Mardigian Library is used primarily by scholars and independent researchers (whether in person or remotely requesting scanned materials or references), university students, high school students, and the general public. The entire library's collections are available free of charge for research and reference purposes, or simply for browsing, and receives on average 100-150 requests/visits per year. Since the library catalog is fully accessible online, requests come from around the world.NAASR offers over 50 educational programs each year and co-sponsors programs, lectures and conferences with other academic and cultural organizations at venues throughout the country, which are also broadcast and archived online worldwide through its YouTube channel Armenian Studies. NAASR supports scholars worldwide through research and assistance. In 2023, 39 grants were approved for support by NAASR and the Knights of Vartan Fund for Armenian Studies. The grant recipients were mostly global, including from the US. NAASR runs a bookstore, which is the largest English-language bookstore on Armenian topics, available online and onsite, with over 2,000 titles.NAASR's members include scholars, students, researchers, and members of the general public. Purchases of collection items are stated at cost and donated collection items are recorded at fair value at the date of accession. Collection items are not depreciated since the Organization has the means to maintain them. The Organization's collections are protected, kept unencumbered, cared for, and preserved. As a matter of policy, the proceeds of items in collections that are sold will be used to acquire other items for collections and for the direct care of collection items. The Organization considers direct care to entail actions that enhance the usefulness or quality of the collection items to ensure they will continue to benefit the public. No collection items were sold during the year ended December 31, 2023. Part V, Line 4: The Organization's endowment funds include both donor-restricted endowment funds and funds designated by the Board of Directors to function as endowment. As required by accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America, net asset associated with endowment funds, including funds designated by the Board of Directors to function as endowments, are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions. The Organization classifies as net assets with donor restrictions the original value of gifts donated to the endowment held in perpetuity. The remaining portion of the donor-restricted endowment fund is classified as net assets with donor restrictions until those amounts are appropriated for expenditure by the Organization's spending policy and in accordance with the original restriction on the gift. Realized and unrealized gains and losses, and investment income are allocated to each individual fund based on the relationship of its fair value to the total fair value of all investments held in the endowment using an average at the beginning and end of the calendar year. The Organization adopted investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding supported by its endowment by utilizing the endowment investment returns during the year while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets. Under this policy, as approved by the Board of Directors, the endowment assets are invested in a manner that is intended to enhance or preserve the long-term purchasing power, while assuming a moderate level of investment risk. In establishing this policy, the Organization considered the long-term expected return on its endowment. To satisfy its long-term rate-of-return objectives, the Organization utilized a total return strategy in which investment returns are achieved through both capital appreciation (realized and unrealized) and current yield (interest and dividends). The Organization targets a diversified asset allocation that places an emphasis on equity-based investments to achieve its long-term objectives within prudent risk constraints.
