The primary activity is the Joplin Memorial Run, which is held in May, and includes a half-marathon, 5K run and kids run in honor of the 161 victims of the May 22, 2011 tornado in Joplin, MO. Proceeds of the event allow us to support other 501 (c) 3 organizations, and to create and operate other active lifestyle type of events in the future. In our first year (2012) we were able to contribute over $30K to local charities. In 2013 and again in 2014 we were able to contribute over $20K to local charities. As part of our 2014 contributions, we were able to provide athletic equipment to several tornado victims families. In 2015 through 2019 we contributed over $125K. We continue to support other similar causes to promote healthy activities. Our 2013 mission was to produce 161 banners in honor of the victims, which will be proudly displayed year after year at this signature event. In 2013 over $20,000 was donated and the banners were displayed proudly for the first time. Moving forward we continue to support other like efforts. In 2022 the cloth banners were replaced with a permanent 17-foot sculpture. 0 0 91573 0 0 Joplin Memorial Run general expenses, this includes general operational costs of the event, excluding cash awards, prizes. A full marathon was added in 2016, but just for the 5th anniversary year. In 2017 a relay race was added as well. We change our event to match the ever changing tastes of the running community. 2020 we moved our race to December and greatly reduced our numbers allowed to allow for social distancing and enhanced safety procedures. This allowed our event to safely take place. For 2021, we are back to May races and changed starting line to new location due to large construction project. They include such things as medical services for the runners, marketing including radio, tv, and other media. Food and beverages are also part of this for the runners. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b This form is completed by the Treasurer based on using prior years 990's and current financial records. A review of the organizations records was last done by Roger Wrestler, Independent CPA covering 2019 and 2020 fiscal years. Reviews will be done for 2021, 22, 23 and 24 when authorized by the board. An email copy of the draft of the 990 is provided to each board member, and they are given time to review and comment prior to submitting. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c All board members are professional member of the community and as such are familiar with conflicts of interest as it pertains to the board. Any conflict of interest is to be noted in the meeting minutes. The board does not have a great deal of decisions to make that deal with the day-to-day operations of the organization, but instead their focus is more on overall policies and larger financial items such as donations to be made from the proceeds and helping to set the overall budget. None of the board members receive any compensation for their service to the organization as a director of the board.
