The collection at June 30, 2023 consists of artwork donated during fiscal years 1999 through 2001 and in 2011. All donated artwork received by the School is fully insured and is considered to be part of the art collection displayed throughout the School for viewing. Pt V, Line 4 The board adopted in June 2018 a revised investment policy that covers the endowment as well as other investments. The endowment is composed of both donor restricted and non donor restricted funds. This money is to be used to help fund capital projects and in extenuating financial circumstances to provide income for the operating expense budget. Pt X, Line 2 Montessori School of Greater Hartford, Inc. is a School under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(a), as a School described in Section 501(c)(3) and is not subject to Federal or state income taxes. Therefore, no provision for income taxes has been reflected in the financial statements. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the School's tax-exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. If the School had unrelated business income taxes, it would recognize interest and penalties associated with any tax matters as part of the income tax provision and include accrued interest and penalties with the related tax liability in the statements of financial position. The School did not incur unrelated business income taxes during the years ended June 30, 2022 or 2021. In addition, the School qualifies for the charitable contribution deduction under Section 170(b)(1)(A) and has been classified as an School that is not a private foundation under Section 509(a)(2). Management believes the School has no uncertain tax positions as of June 30, 2023 and June 30, 2022, respectively. The School's federal and state Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for three years after they were filed. The School's Federal tax filings prior to the year ended June 30, 2020 are closed. The Finance Committee reviews the proposed draft and agrees to its readiness for submission to the Board of Directors. The Form 990 is made available to the Board of Directors for review and comment prior to filing. Pt VI, Line 12c The Head of School and Board Chair reviews, no later than October 30th of each year, all conflict of interest statements. In the event of a conflict, the Head of School and Board Chair meets with the Board Member to assess the conflict and takes approproate action to eliminate such conflict. Such actions might include excusing the Board Member from certain discussions or votes or may include removing the Board Member from office in event the Board Member does not resign. Pt VI, Line 15a The executive committee recommends the compensation for the Head of School. In order to determine proper compensation, the committee first considers amounts used by comparable establishments. An assessment of the compensation of similar employees of other Montessori schools, Association of Montessori Internationale (AMI) Schools throughout the United States, is conducted, and these amounts are taken into consideration. The Committee also considers the employee's performance in determining compensation and benefits. Using these amounts, the Committee suggests an amount of compensation to be awarded to the employee in question and presents this amount, along with an explanation of the reasoning it used to arrive at this number, to the Board of Directors for approval. All reasonable and prudent steps are taken to ensure that the process used in determining compensation does not violate any part of MSGH's conflict of interest policy.
