The Samaritan Center provides help with utilities, rent or life sustaining medications, food, cleaning supplies and personal care products that cannot be purchased with food stamps, school supplies, and layettes filled with necessities for newborns. The Samaritan Center is and ancillary auxiliary to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which has tax exempt status as a church. The social services provided by the Samaritan Center are a direct implementation of the mission to the Seventh-day Adventist Church as stated in the Church's mission Statement: "Following the example of Jesus, we commit ourselves to humble service, ministering to individuals and populations most affected by poverty, tragedy, hopelessness and disease." The Samaritan Center is responsive to the church in various ways. The treasurer of the Georgia Cumberland Conference and a local Seventh-day Adventist pastor are members of the Samaritan Center's Board of Directors. The executive director of the Samaritan Center also maintains a positive interpersonal and professional relationship with various church/Conference administrators, including the president of the Georgia Cumberland Conference. The Samaritan Center is also invited to present at the Georgian Cumberland Conference's constituency meeting each year. The Samaritan Center's primary function in the local community is to provide social services, including daily client case management, a food pantry and annual school supplies drive, a Thanksgiving food drive, and various local mission projects. The Samaritan Center's secondary purpose as a thrift store is used to fund the social service department and to encourage the local community to recycle and reuse resources. Thus substantially all of the Samaritan Center's activities in 2023 further the exempt purpose of the Seventh-day Adventist church by fulfilling the Church's mission as stated above. Schedule A, Part IV, Section E, Line 2b A community services operation is standard among the conferences and sub conferences of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The church has a national humanitarian agency called Adventist Community Services. But for the Samaritan Center's presence in East Hamilton County, Tennessee, the Seventh-day Adventist church would still seek to provide the same services but through the efforts of individual churches on a smaller and more inefficient scale.
