<ExplanationTxt>The purpose of this letter is to request a late filing penalty abatement. I have yet to receive a penalty determination letter, but I know for a fact that our 2023 990-EZ is late. Our fiscal year ended June 30, 2023. Therefore our tax returns were due November 15th. I was unaware of this missed filing up until last week. Once I realized that I had not submitted our 990-EZ I immediately worked to complete and submit the filing. We are an extremely small organization servicing a greatly under-serviced population. Any penalty would greatly impact our ability to meet the needs of the populations with whom we work. I am the sole person in-charge of both fiscal and program management for this small non-profit community youth development organization. The reason for our late 2023 tax filing was not willfull neglect, but a) an extremely busy programming schedule in October and November 2023 and b) a lack of experience with fillings other than the 990-N. First off, my main focus during the months leading up to our November 15th deadline were spent managing 5 teaching artists working on two major programs, including an international youth exchange trip to Berlin, Germany, a return visit to NYC or 18 young German artists and three music production classes servicing over 80 young people in NYC. Aside from overseeing curriculum development, teaching artist training and management and program assessment, I also maintained monthly fiscal reports. I managed to maintain all but one of our my responsibilities, sadly it was one of my biggest responsibilities-our tax filing. Second, I am very inexperienced when it comes to tax filing for this organization. From 2019 through 2022 we never grossed over $50,000 so we only had to submit 990-N filings. The process was so easy that I literally took it for granted. Being so busy, I assumed that I had completed a 990-N for fiscal year 2023, but I didn't. And even worse we grossed over $50,000 so we actually had to file the 990-EZ form. Upon realizing my mistake I immediately filled out the 990-EZ form and am submitting the filing now. Finally, I have been working on and off with a non-profit accounting consultant. Up until recently they had helped me develop and execute a plan for fiscal management. They helped me develop a monthly financial reporting system. They also helped me with all other financial and/or tax filings. Recently she unexpectedly lost her father. We went from talking at least once a month to not talking for nearly 5 months. I take full responsibility for missing the filing, but also know if she had not been dealing with the loss of her father that she would have helped me realize the need for us to fill out a 990-EZ for 2023. The shear realization that my error could cost the organization thousands of dollars is horrifying. I've worked with our board of directors to set-up an internal 990 filing deadline of August 31st to make sure that his never happens again. This deadline is during a slow period in our programming schedule, so I should have no problem filing our taxes in a timely manner moving forward. We are up-to-date on all other filings. And we continue to maintain up-to-date financial reports. Please reach out to me if you have any other questions or concerns.</ExplanationTxt>
