The vessel is used for public events, education programs, and private charters. 0 0 190784 0 0 Restoration/Preservation: VIRGINIA V returned to the shipyard in January for a period of 53 days pier-side to replace about 30 feet of the port guard amidships, which had sustained significant decay over 21 years. Underlying frames were found in good condition. While the ship was at the yard, a pro-bono dive team conducted the planned Alternate Hull Examination with the Coast Guard inspector in attendance, and no discrepancies were found. CG approval for this inspection, in lieu of the normally required biennial drydocking, was obtained in 2022. The Foundation saved tens of thousands of dollars as a result. After the yard period, the ship steamed to Bainbridge Island to spend three weeks moored in salt water for the sake of hull preservation. During the annual inspection cruise, Coast Guard inspectors determined that the ship needed to be equipped with remote boiler shutdowns as a safety measure. Foundation volunteers designed a system, obtained CG approval of the design, and completed a substantial amount of the installation by year-end. Throughout the year, the Director of Engineering conducted 35 routine work parties attended by three to ten volunteers each, who tended routine mechanical/electrical maintenance, topside painting, and a variety of repairs, keeping the ship in optimal condition. Noteworthy accomplishments include repairs to the engine-order telegraph, replacement of a potable water pump, and repairs to the steam whistles. The Foundation's application for a Washington State Heritage Capital grant supporting the 2025 haul out was approved in the amount of $745,000 and included in the state's capital appropriation, which Governor Jay Inslee signed in May. In addition to current-year expenses noted, the Foundation accrued 2023 capital expenditures of $91,012 for repair of the port guard, and was invoiced $16,317 in late December for 1,650 board-feet of old growth Fir planking and futtock stock purchased in preparation for the 2025 haul out. Current year expenses include 50% of reported depreciation. 235656 0 220071 Operation: VIRGINIA V was built in 1922 and is the only traditional wooden freight-and-passenger ship regularly operating under steam on the tidal waters of the United States. VIRGINIA V conducted 61 discrete voyages over the course of 49 operating days in 2023, including 23 cruises open to the public, 11 wedding and seven other private charters, and two student cruises, carrying a total of 3,361 passengers. The ship circumnavigated Bainbridge and Vashon Islands, and made an extended trip to Olympia to attend the Harbor Days Festival over Labor Day Weekend. One regular employee and 54 active volunteers crewed the vessel filling seven required positions and up to eight training positions on each trip. Expenses include 50% of reported depreciation. 25039 0 10000 Interpretation/Education: VIRGINIA V held 100 days of open-ship at Lake Union Park and Puget Sound ports during 2023, welcoming over 6,000 passersby for free visits. Our Senior Docent and volunteers led guided tours for almost all of these occasions, acquainting visitors with the ship and the history of the Puget Sound mosquito fleet. During 54 revenue and positioning cruises and 15 dockside events, the ship welcomed over 3,300 underway passengers and over 900 dockside guests. Crew routinely engaged passengers to tell the ship's story or describe its operation. The ship's steam engine remains fully visible to passengers. Engineering crew provided detailed interpretation of this artifact, in service since 1915, and our Captains welcomed passengers into the wheelhouse when the safety of vessel operation permitted. Foundation staff and volunteers revel in sharing the ship and did so at every opportunity. VIRGINIA V conducted educational cruises for Northstar Middle School and Ballard HS Maritime Academy students in May 2023, during which over 100 students rotated between learning stations around the ship with a variety of hands-on activities, including steering the ship, operating the engine, and using fire-fighting equipment. The Foundation continued its summer internship program for high schoolers, hiring three students who worked 207 hours on the ship in deck- and engine-crew capacities.
